Overview

We are seeking a Band 7 Macmillan Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join our Speech & Language Therapy Team at Darent Valley Hospital – part of Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, one of the largest hospital trusts in North Kent and proud to be CQC rated Good. The post includes a 5% cost of living supplement. Full-time, part-time or job-share options will be considered to fit with our flexible working approach and Joy at Work philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Work across an inpatient and outpatient setting, with the outpatient caseload comprising approximately 80% of the workload (predominantly outpatients with Head and Neck Cancer).
  • Provide dedicated specialist care for inpatients and outpatients with other cancer diagnoses, namely lung and oesophagus, reflecting an expanding evidence base for the role of SLT in oncology.
  • Engage in MDT liaison and opportunities to maintain and develop specialist skills in swallowing, communication and cancer care across the service.
  • Collaborate within our large SLT team alongside a junior Macmillan SLT, dedicated Macmillan administrative support, and service Leads; contribute to expanding the Macmillan SLT team as service needs grow.
  • Independently assess and treat a range of swallowing and communication disorders resulting from oncological treatment; experience with adult dysphagia and a cancer caseload is essential.
  • Work with a diverse caseload with varying rehabilitative or supportive needs, and use informal counselling skills; supervision of juniors/students where appropriate.
  • Knowledge of videofluoroscopy and FEES is highly desirable; the team provides in-house training to develop competencies and supports ongoing development in these areas.
  • Community visiting occurs in specific circumstances but is a very small component of the workload.

Qualifications and experience

  • Experience of working with adult dysphagia and a cancer caseload, with the ability to independently assess and treat swallowing and communication disorders following oncological treatment.
  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload with rehabilitative or supportive needs; informal counselling skills; experience supervising juniors/students.
  • Knowledge or experience of videofluoroscopy and FEES is desirable; the service actively supports development of competencies in these areas.

About the team and setting

You will work within a large SLT team in the Therapies Directorate, with wider AHP support mechanisms, to care for people with cancer diagnoses. The post is based at Darent Valley Hospital as part of the Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust.
