Purpose of the Post
Receive workplace experiences and support to complete a higher qualification and develop into a leader and expert in the field. The Department of Environment provides key frontline services to the people of Gwynedd, including planning responsibilities such as development control and planning policy within the Gwynedd Planning Authority area.
Main Duties
- Provide practical and professional support across all areas of planning, including application processing, enforcement investigation and contribution to strategic policy.
- The Planning Professional Trainee role offers broad practical experience in development management, enforcement and planning policy, supporting bid work, research and strategic projects as part of Gwynedd's planning team.
- Assist with development and compliance management duties, including application processing and report preparation.
- Support the presentation of reports in committees, site visits and relevant meetings.
- Prepare statements and reports for appeals and represent the Authority as a professional witness.
- Investigate cases of breaches of planning rules and contribute to enforcement proceedings and appeals.
- Provide professional advice to developers, the public and Local Members on planning matters.
- Support planning policy work, including the preparation of the Local Development Plan, supplementary guidance and strategic documents.
- Collaborate on strategic projects and research that are a priority for the Council, and represent Gwynedd in external meetings.
- Follow the Council's policies on health and safety, equality, data protection and carbon reduction.

Relevant Qualifications and Training
Possess or are likely to earn a class grade of 2:2 or higher. Your degree should be in a subject that is relevant to the field.

- Reading and understanding – higher level. Be able to understand standard, formal and informal Welsh and written English. Be able to gather information from various sources such as letters, reports, articles, through the medium of Welsh and English in order to carry out the job.
- Writing – higher level. To present written information with confidence in the form of a letter, a more detailed and technical report and to respond to written requests conveying information, ideas and views through the medium of Welsh and English.
