Purpose of the post

  • Working as part of a residential team and assisting the manager to provide short respite care to disabled children.
  • Ensure that the people of Gwynedd are at the centre of everything we do.
  • Provide direct care and preventative interventions for disabled children and young people on a day-to-day basis along with other support duties and tasks within the unit.
  • Work closely with internal and external partners to achieve the best outcomes for service users.
  • Act as deputy manager of the home taking responsibility for some specific aspects delegated by the Unit Manager.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of the unit.
  • Assist the manager with tasks associated with maintaining the home's registration with Care Inspectorate Wales.
  • Provide a range of interventions using the most effective and appropriate intervention to correspond with the needs of children and their families.

Responsibility for functions

  • Equipment - kitchen and cooking, ensuring appropriate use of the building's facilities (including hoists).
  • Supervise staff.
  • Financial management.
  • Order goods/equipment.
  • Ensure the building's safety.

Main duties

  • Contribute to draw up care and support plans, participate in reviews and other meetings, and offer assistance in implementing the plans.
  • Be a team member providing guidance, supporting colleagues and receiving support as needed.
  • Develop a good working relationship with families to develop trust, improve contact and access to services and assist with communication and coordination.
  • Develop the resilience and confidence of families to empower them to make informed decisions and take responsibility for their own lives by providing them with the necessary skills.
  • Attend Planning and Review Meetings and contribute to the development of an action plan.
  • Keep up-to-date notes of all meetings attended and the case work undertaken.
  • Provide a summary and reports on case work.
  • Encourage and support families to follow the action plan.
  • Draw up and provide a range of interventions to support families in their local communities.
  • Support and enable Children to live independently within the community.
  • Support and enable Children to reach their full potential, in a manner that promotes their well-being, health, development and safety.
  • Ensure that the service responds to the child’s needs.
  • Be vigilant of signs of unhappiness and abuse and ensure that children are protected and monitored.
  • Inform the line manager or any other suitable person of any poor or concerning practice or any evidence that mentions this.
  • Take care of young people's physical needs as required, e.g., cooking, laundry, ironing, shopping, washing, managing money or by assisting children to complete these tasks.
  • Inform colleagues of any relevant developments/incidents e.g., during shift changeovers.
  • Speak to children and listen to them, recording anything significant.
  • Attend team meetings and any other meetings as required and considered suitable by the Team Manager, which includes deputising for the manager.
  • Receive regular supervision.
  • Share the responsibilities of supervising permanent staff with the home Manager.
  • Provide guidance to staff with matters that arise from day to day.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day running of the unit in the absence of the manager.
  • Assist the manager to ensure effective management of all aspects of the day-to-day running of the unit, including budget management and ensuring compliance with the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care Act.
  • Be flexible, within reasonable boundaries, to ensure sufficient staff provision for the unit.
  • Familiarise yourself with the Council’s policies, arrangements and guidelines relating to good practice and Health and Safety related issues.
  • Attend training courses in accordance with training needs.
  • Undertake any task that is suitable and reasonable for the post that is for the benefit and development of the child.
  • Responsible for self-development.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety rules in the workplace in accordance with the responsibilities noted in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Council’s Health and Safety Policy.
  • Operate within the Council’s policies in relation to equal opportunities and equality.
  • Responsibility for managing information in accordance with the Council’s information management standards and guidelines.
  • Ensure that personal information is treated in accordance with Data Protection legislation.
  • Commitment to reducing the Council’s carbon emissions in accordance with the Carbon Management Plan, and to encourage others to act positively towards reducing the Council’s Carbon Footprint.
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duty which corresponds with the salary level and responsibility level of the job.
  • Responsible for reporting any concern or suspicion that a child or vulnerable adult is being abused.

Special circumstances

  • The post may mean working unsociable hours outside normal office hours on occasions.
  • The post is in Hafan Y Ser Penrhyndeudraeth and Hafan Ni Criccieth, but it will also involve travelling as the post-holder will deal with cases across Gwynedd.

  • A commitment to qualify within a specific timetable to complete the level 5 Leadership and Management in Health and Care.
  • Desirable: Relevant training in the care field, Champion in a specialist field, Supervision, IOSH, Site Management, DISC Communication, ILM, Coaching, Mentoring.

Relevant experience

  • Essential: Experience of having worked/supported individuals to live their lives as they wish.
  • Experience of working together as part of a team.
  • Desirable: Experience of caring or dealing with vulnerable adults, Experience of working in a professional team, Knowledge and understanding of supporting individuals with complex needs.
