Darlington Borough Council’s Vehicle Maintenance Team is looking to recruit a skilled and motivated individual to fill a single vacancy as an HGV Technician or an MOT Tester/Mechanic. The role involves delivering a high‑quality, customer‑focused vehicle maintenance service within a busy workshop environment, supporting the maintenance, inspection, and repair of the Council’s fleet, plant, and customer vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Support delivery of comprehensive maintenance and servicing for Council vehicles and plant, ensuring compliance with legislation and the Council’s Operator’s Licence.
- Inspect, service and repair vehicles for external organisations and members of the public.
- Carry out MOT inspections in line with DVSA standards, including Class IV and VII testing, Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicle inspections.
- Contribute to high‑quality repair and maintenance service for vehicles and equipment used by internal and external customers.
- Operate within workshop hours: Monday to Thursday 7:00am‑6:00pm, Friday 7:00am‑5:30pm.
Qualifications
- A minimum of three years’ experience as an HGV Technician (or DVSA Nominated Tester Certificate for MOT role).
- Skills in working on diesel and petrol engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems; experience of light goods vehicles desirable.
- Valid HGV driving licence with a minimum Category C entitlement (or full, valid driving licence for MOT role).
- DVSA Nominated Tester Certificate (Classes IV and VII) essential for MOT role.
- City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in Motor Vehicle Technology or related subject.
- For HGV Technician: valid HGV licence Category C.
