Job Description:

As a Senior Technical Author, you will be an experienced practitioner within the Product Information team, creating high-quality technical materials to support our customers, partners, and the wider Darktrace community. You will combine hands-on authorship with quality review and mentoring, while introducing technical communication best practices from across the industry. Working closely with Product Information leadership, you will support the development of our authors and contribute to the ongoing evolution of our documentation approach, helping to embed high standards in content design, information architecture, and user experience. You will be comfortable writing and reviewing content directly, while also being able to step back and assess documentation with an experienced eye. This is primarily a senior individual contributor role, with the potential to lead a small, high-performing team as the role evolves. This is a hybrid role with two set days a week in the Cambridge office.

What will I be doing?

  • Research, write, and maintain high-quality technical documentation across a range of products, audiences, and technical domains.
  • Review and evolve an established body of technical content to maintain and improve standards of quality, consistency, usability, and structure.
  • Drive improvements to our documentation, introducing proven approaches to content structure, navigation, and information architecture.
  • Apply technical communication industry standards, methodologies, and best practices to the content you produce and review.
  • Act as a trusted source of technical communication expertise, providing guidance to colleagues and helping to raise documentation standards across the team.
  • Support the development and improvement of technical and developer-focused documentation, including API and integration content where required.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams and subject matter experts to ensure documentation remains accurate, relevant, and aligned with product development.

What experience do I need?

  • 5+ years of experience creating and maintaining technical documentation for software, hardware, or other complex technical products.
  • Experience assessing and reviewing documentation across a large, established content set.
  • A track record of raising quality standards across content produced by a team of authors.
  • Experience mentoring and developing less experienced authors as an established part of your role.
  • Experience introducing authoring practices or approaches from previous teams or organisations to improve documentation quality and effectiveness.
  • Strong understanding of technical communication principles, information architecture, and user-centred content design.
  • Hands-on experience with modern authoring toolchains, including Markdown or HTML, documentation-as-code, and version control tools such as Git.
  • Experience creating documentation for APIs or other developer-facing technologies.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex concepts to a range of audiences, from experienced engineers to less technical end users.

What would make me stand out?

  • Experience contributing to documentation standards, style guides, or authoring frameworks.
  • Experience leading structured content audits and turning findings into documentation improvements.
  • Experience with API documentation technologies and tooling, including REST APIs, SDKs, and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.
  • Exposure to cybersecurity concepts, products, or technical domains.
  • Experience managing a small team of technical authors, or equivalent experience leading and developing others.
