The role in detail
We’re looking for a Credit Manager skilled in both credit and data disciplines to join our Corporate & Business (C&B) Credit team within Risk Management. Our team is responsible for second-line credit assessment and underwriting, and co‑management of credit risk for customers in financial difficulties. We balance robust credit risk management with a strong focus on positive customer outcomes, supporting the development and implementation of credit policy and parameters for both our core Northern Ireland market and our activities across the UK. We apply expert credit analysis while supporting the implementation of robotics and AI decisioning processes.
As Credit Manager, you will report directly to the Head of Credit supporting improvements in the sourcing and shaping of portfolio, sectoral and credit quality data from both local and group data analytics teams. You’ll assist in further process improvements, be an active member of a continuous improvement working group with first-line C&B banking, collaborate with local and group automation and robotics teams, co‑lead the adoption of new processes and risk‑based analysis techniques to drive efficiencies in the credit assessment, reviewing and reporting environments, and evolve semi‑automated frameworks for effective stress testing of larger exposures and specific portfolio segments.
You will exercise a delegated lending authority in line with Group Credit Policy, commercial strategy, risk appetite, standard operating procedures and asset quality requirements. You will assess credit applications for business, financial and structural risks, including consideration of ESG matters and geopolitical, security and energy risks, working within the framework of Consumer Duty obligations and in line with service level standards to support customer experience and satisfaction outcomes.
The role also involves analysing sustainability‑led applications, developing expert credit skills across a range of sectors, engaging commercially with first‑line colleagues to provide value‑adding input and challenge, and contributing to growth objectives while managing risk. Key responsibilities also include identifying portfolio issues, improvement opportunities, scoping and delivering on training needs of both Credit and first‑line colleagues, deputising for the Senior Manager C&B Credit Assessment or co‑presenting cases, and managing customers experiencing financial difficulty within the C&B Special Credits unit.
What skills and qualifications will you need?
- Experienced credit professional in a corporate banking or finance environment, comfortable interacting, influencing, and negotiating with senior corporate & business relationship managers, and presenting analysis in credit decision forums and risk committees.
- Familiar with corporate & business banking portfolios, product types and sectoral mix, and capable of specifying data delivery requirements.
- Experience dealing with customers and businesses based in NI and the rest of the UK across diverse sectors such as trading businesses, housing associations, renewables, and commercial real estate.
- Proven ability to make logical, well‑balanced decisions under pressure and with complex data in credit decision forums.
- Strong customer focus and commerciality, extensive product knowledge of core lending facilities, and over 3 years’ experience in a related role with a business degree or equivalent, and relevant post‑graduate accountancy or Institute of Bankers qualifications.
- Accountability for making decisions as a material risk taker under the UK FCA Senior Managers Framework and the required background checks.
