We’re hiring a Backend Engineer to join our Account Discovery team—the primary gateway into Wise.
Responsibilities
- Build backend services that generate near real‑time account overviews (recent actions, balances, key events) that are easy to understand and trust.
- Develop recommendation and discovery capabilities that are personalised, context‑aware, and measurable.
- Build APIs and supporting systems that make the dashboard fast, consistent and available across devices and regions.
- Build high‑scale, low‑latency back‑end services that stay fast under heavy traffic, balancing real‑time freshness with rock‑solid correctness and delivering personalisation at scale.
- Tackle distributed systems complexity (resilience, failures, retries, idempotency).
- Enable experimentation and measurement (A/B testing, instrumentation).
- Engineer with security, privacy and compliance baked in from day one.
Qualifications
- Software development experience (preferably using Java).
- A strong product mindset and passion for customer experience, prioritising work with the customers in mind and making data‑driven decisions to fix customer pain‑points.
- Great communication skills and the ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
- Experience working with relational and non-relational databases, query optimisation and designing schemas.
- Enjoy writing clean and testable code.
- Believe in and follow best coding practices, code reviews and open feedback.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and distributed and concurrent systems.
