We’re hiring a Backend Engineer to join our Account Discovery team—the primary gateway into Wise.

Responsibilities

  • Build backend services that generate near real‑time account overviews (recent actions, balances, key events) that are easy to understand and trust.
  • Develop recommendation and discovery capabilities that are personalised, context‑aware, and measurable.
  • Build APIs and supporting systems that make the dashboard fast, consistent and available across devices and regions.
  • Build high‑scale, low‑latency back‑end services that stay fast under heavy traffic, balancing real‑time freshness with rock‑solid correctness and delivering personalisation at scale.
  • Tackle distributed systems complexity (resilience, failures, retries, idempotency).
  • Enable experimentation and measurement (A/B testing, instrumentation).
  • Engineer with security, privacy and compliance baked in from day one.

Qualifications

  • Software development experience (preferably using Java).
  • A strong product mindset and passion for customer experience, prioritising work with the customers in mind and making data‑driven decisions to fix customer pain‑points.
  • Great communication skills and the ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Experience working with relational and non-relational databases, query optimisation and designing schemas.
  • Enjoy writing clean and testable code.
  • Believe in and follow best coding practices, code reviews and open feedback.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and distributed and concurrent systems.
