PURPOSE:
Safety Advocates are located throughout the District schools to assist in maintaining an orderly and safe school environment, promoting improved school climate and effective learning opportunities. Safety Advocates respond to emergencies, deter suspicious activity, and serve as a visible presence to maintain order and safety within the school environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working under the direct supervision of the building Administrator, duties may vary by building but generally include:
- Patrolling School Premises: Regularly walking around the school building, parking lots, and surrounding areas to identify potential security issues.
- Access Control: Monitoring entry points, checking visitor identification, and ensuring only authorized personnel are allowed access to the school.
- Enforcing School Rules: Upholding school policies and regulations, including dress code, student behavior, and visitor protocols.
- Responding to Emergencies: Taking immediate action in incidents like fire, medical emergencies, active shooter situations, or security breaches.
- Investigating Suspicious Activity: Observing and reporting suspicious behavior or potential threats to school safety.
- Monitoring Surveillance Systems: Actively observing security cameras and monitoring alarms to detect potential issues.
- Communicating with Staff and Administration: Reporting incidents, concerns, and safety issues to school administrators and law enforcement when necessary.
- Maintaining a Visible Presence: Being present and readily available to deter criminal activity and provide a sense of security.
- Student Interaction: Interacting with students in a positive and professional manner, providing guidance and support when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with law enforcement, security, or similar preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work on a team.
- Strong communication skills.
- Bilingual preferred.
PAY GRADE/LEVEL:
As per Union contract – $20.86 per hour
Monday – Friday; 10-month position
Hours are Monday through Friday
Physical Demands:
The Safety Advocate position is physically demanding. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
