The Conservation Specialist / Ecologist will take responsibility for ecological management across the Estate, ensuring that conservation efforts support and do not hinder operational needs. This includes overseeing Conservation Projects and ensuring compliance with all environmental and ecological legislation relating to designated conservation areas (SSSI, SPA, SAC) on site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the delivery and oversight of the Conservation Projects, ensuring all legal obligations regarding protected species are met.
- Maintain and manage the programme in partnership with the on-site ecologist.
- Ensure compliance with environmental responsibilities for the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Protection Area (SPA), and Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
- Monitor and support the conservation status of these areas, maintaining alignment with policies and environmental legislation.
- Act as liaison between the client and regulatory bodies including Natural England.
- Provide ecological advice and prepare detailed reports to support land-use decisions, trials, and developments affecting designated conservation areas.
- Oversee data management, including the use of Recorder 2006, and contribute to the review and update of Business and Ecological Plans (BEPs).
- Serve as Site Manager for the Environmental Change Network Project, ensuring delivery of project goals.
- Ensure effective execution of agreed projects within the PTN Rural Maintenance Plan.
- Supply ecological data for Habitat Regulations Assessments and Sustainability Appraisals.
- Conduct and review risk assessments and ensure adequate control measures are in place.
- Collect, manage, and analyse ecological data in support of operational and legal obligations.
- Contribute to internal and external communications as directed, ensuring alignment with publication policies.
- Monitor and preserve the Archaeological Area of the Range to avoid non-compliance with heritage regulations.
Essential Requirements:
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Ecology or a related field.
- Practical understanding of MOD protocols and operational frameworks.
- Demonstrable experience in land management and best practice application.
- Proven experience managing and maintaining SSSI, SPA, and SAC areas in accordance with environmental law.
- Strong working knowledge of key legislation: Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017, Environment Act 2021.
- Ability to apply conservation and rural land management practices in a practical setting.
- Skilled in identifying and integrating emerging best practices to benefit ecological stewardship.
- Confident in stakeholder engagement and relationship-building.
