Civil, Structural & Architectural Engineer

I would strengthen the advert by making the role sound more like a technical authority rather than a traditional design engineer.

The additional information you've provided fits naturally into the role overview, responsibilities and "About You" sections.

Here is an updated version of the relevant sections

The Role

As the Civil, Structural & Architectural Engineer, you will act as the technical authority for all Civil, Structural and Architectural engineering activities across a diverse portfolio of projects valued between £3m and £40m.

Working across approximately 12 live projects at any one time, predominantly within the healthcare and higher education sectors, you will provide technical governance from concept design through to construction, commissioning and project close-out.

Rather than undertaking detailed design yourself, you will oversee and manage external design consultants, ensuring their solutions are technically robust, coordinated, compliant and deliverable.

Supporting multidisciplinary project teams, you'll provide expert advice throughout the project lifecycle, reviewing designs, resolving technical challenges and ensuring quality standards are maintained through to final snagging, handover documentation and O&M manuals.

This is a highly autonomous, niche role requiring exceptional technical judgement, strong stakeholder management and the ability to balance multiple complex projects simultaneously.

  • What You’ll Be Doing
  • Act as the technical authority for Civil, Structural and Architectural engineering across a portfolio of projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and governance from feasibility and design through to construction and handover.
  • Manage and coordinate external Civil, Structural and Architectural design consultants, ensuring high-quality, compliant and buildable solutions.
  • Lead the technical review, challenge and approval of all Civil, Structural and Architectural designs.
  • Support multidisciplinary project teams delivering M&E-led schemes incorporating structural alterations, steelwork, new energy centres and associated civil infrastructure.
  • Ensure designs are fully coordinated across Mechanical, Electrical and Architectural disciplines.
  • Attend design reviews, technical workshops and client meetings, providing expert engineering advice.
  • Carry out site inspections, technical audits and snagging activities to verify design intent has been delivered.
  • Review commissioning documentation, record drawings and Operations & Maintenance manuals prior to project completion.
  • Support commercial and procurement teams by reviewing technical specifications, scopes of work and tender submissions.
  • Identify technical risks and develop practical engineering solutions throughout project delivery.
  • Mentor engineers and promote technical excellence and continuous improvement across the business.
  • Work alongside Design Managers, Project Engineers, Mechanical, Electrical and Controls Engineers across several UK-based project teams.

About You

You'll be an accomplished Civil, Structural & Architectural Engineer with significant experience delivering complex engineering projects in multidisciplinary environments.

You'll ideally have experience in

  • Acting as a technical authority or senior technical reviewer on complex engineering projects.
  • Managing outsourced design consultants rather than producing detailed designs yourself.
  • Reviewing, challenging and approving Civil, Structural and Architectural designs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Delivering projects from concept through construction and final handover.
  • Civil, Structural and Architectural design using the RIBA Plan of Work.
  • Large-scale M&E-led infrastructure and decarbonisation projects incorporating structural modifications and new energy centres.
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Structural design involving steelwork, plant bases, flues, pipe bridges, cable supports, platforms and associated infrastructure.
  • Electrical infrastructure including substations, transformer compounds and HV installations.
  • Managing specialist consultants undertaking surveys, ground investigations and structural assessments.
  • Healthcare, higher education or other live operational environments.
  • Site inspections, snagging, commissioning reviews and handover documentation.
  • Retrofit and energy efficiency projects including solar PV, roofing and building fabric improvements.
  • What We’re Looking For

You'll be someone who can

  • Operate as the recognised technical authority for Civil, Structural and Architectural engineering.
  • Confidently oversee and manage outsourced design teams while maintaining technical governance.
  • Support and advise project teams from early design through to construction and handover.
  • Review, challenge and approve complex engineering designs with confidence.
  • Manage a portfolio of multiple concurrent projects, typically valued between £3m and £40m.
  • Build strong relationships with consultants, contractors, clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Balance technical excellence with commercial awareness and programme delivery.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision whilst supporting multidisciplinary teams across the business.

These additions make it much clearer that the successful candidate is not expected to be sat producing drawings, but instead will be the senior technical expert responsible for governing outsourced design, coordinating consultants and supporting project teams through the entire project lifecycle.

This will help attract experienced Principal or Lead CSA Engineers rather than design engineers looking for a hands‑on design role.
