Overview

Contract: Full-time

Location: Highstreet Kensington London (office-based, with flexibility depending on operational needs)

Hours: You’ll work closely with the Australian night-shift teams and therefore operate during UK daytime hours. This role will include regular weekend working to support the sporting calendar.

About the Role

Daily Mail Australia is looking for a talented Assistant Sports Editor to work in the department’s senior team and lead night shifts. Suitable candidates will be experienced online reporters – ideally with some management experience - with a track record of working under pressure while coordinating a team during major events. They will be expected to maximise breaking news and spot stories.

The role also involves long-term planning to ensure the best coverage possible around events, providing feedback to team members on their copy and coordinating with the wider Daily Mail Sport team with targets of driving traffic and subscriptions, breaking news, and delivering distinctive, fast-paced sports journalism with a strong understanding of what resonates with Mail readers.

Key to succeeding in this role is an ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines, while being proactive and chasing down the best stories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the editing, commissioning, and publishing of Australian sports coverage across the Daily Mail website
  • Oversee breaking news, live blogs, match reports, exclusives, and analysis across major Australian sports (including AFL, NRL, cricket, rugby union, football, and Olympic sports)
  • Edit copy to Daily Mail standards for accuracy, clarity, speed, tone, and legal compliance
  • Generate story ideas with strong audience appeal, informed by analytics, trends, and social media
  • Work closely with reporters in Australia and other international bureaux to ensure round-the-clock coverage
  • Write headlines, standfirsts, and picture captions optimised for SEO and audience engagement
  • Help plan coverage of major sporting events and tournaments, including out-of-hours work when required

Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience as a digital sports journalist, ideally with a strong background in Australian sport
  • Exceptional news judgement and a proven ability to identify and prioritise high-impact stories
  • Fast, confident editor able to work accurately under pressure in a 24/7 newsroom
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to rewrite copy quickly and decisively
  • Excellent knowledge of digital publishing, SEO best practice, and audience analytics
  • Sound understanding of media law, defamation, and compliance requirements
  • Confident communicator and team player
  • Experience working on a major national or international news brand
  • Familiarity with live blogging tools, CMS platforms, and social publishing workflows
