Health & Safety Manager β Major Projects
Location: North of England | Hybrid Working | UK & Overseas Travel
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
We are working with a growing engineering business to recruit a Health & Safety Manager dedicated to its Major Projects division. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced H&S professional to take ownership of health and safety across complex, high-risk engineering and infrastructure projects.
The role has been created to provide dedicated H&S support to a growing division, giving you the opportunity to shape processes, improve project controls and influence safe delivery from the earliest planning stages through to completion.
This is a hands-on, project-focused position working closely with project managers, engineers, site managers, subcontractors and client H&S teams. You will play a key role in ensuring health and safety is built into project planning, mobilisation and delivery, rather than simply monitoring compliance once work is underway.
Projects involve major refurbishment, engineering installations and infrastructure works, including activities such as working over or near water, bridge works, hydraulics, lifting operations, temporary works and confined spaces.
Responsibilities will include:
- Providing proactive H&S support throughout the project lifecycle, from planning and mobilisation through to delivery.
- Reviewing and developing RAMS, risk assessments, permits to work and project-specific safety documentation.
- Advising on CDM compliance, temporary works, lifting operations and other high-risk activities.
- Supporting site mobilisation and ensuring suitable H&S arrangements are in place before work commences.
- Carrying out site audits, inspections and spot checks, providing practical advice and driving improvements.
- Supporting and coaching project managers, engineers and site teams to strengthen H&S awareness and capability.
- Managing subcontractor H&S assurance, including pre-qualification assessments and ongoing performance monitoring.
- Working with clients and contractors to resolve issues, maintain compliance and identify safe, practical solutions.
- Taking ownership of H&S systems, procedures and documentation across the Major Projects division.
- Attending key project activities and providing additional support where required across sites throughout the UK and potentially overseas.
About You
We are looking for a practical, commercially aware H&S professional who can build strong relationships with operational teams and influence decisions at every level.
You will be confident working in complex project environments, able to challenge unsafe practices when necessary while taking a solutions-focused approach to getting work delivered safely.
Ideally, you will have experience within one or more of the following sectors:
- Construction and major projects
- Civil engineering and infrastructure
- Utilities or water
- Heavy engineering and industrial installations
- Complex engineering or manufacturing projects
Essential experience and knowledge:
- Strong practical knowledge of CDM regulations and their application on projects.
- Experience with RAMS, permits to work and project risk management.
- Understanding of temporary works, lifting operations and LOLER.
- Experience managing risks associated with confined spaces, working at height and other high-risk activities.
- Experience supporting site mobilisation, subcontractor management and H&S assurance.
- The ability to work collaboratively with engineers, project managers and site teams.
- A proactive approach to identifying risks and implementing workable solutions.
- Environmental knowledge, particularly relating to waste management, hydraulic oils and working near water, would be beneficial but is not essential.
The Package
- Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
- Company car, with the opportunity to choose your vehicle after six months.
- Company credit card.
- Work-related equipment and expenses covered.
- Hybrid working, with regular travel to project sites across the UK and occasional overseas travel.
- Regular team meetings at the office in the Pontefract area, approximately every other week.
Why Apply?
This is an opportunity to take genuine ownership of health and safety within a growing Major Projects division. You will have the autonomy to influence project planning, develop the capability of operational teams and help establish a consistent approach to H&S across complex engineering projects.
