Qualifications Required

  • GCSEs in Maths, English, and a science subject (or equivalent) at grade 4–9 or equivalent.

Personal Qualities

  • Ability to work unsupervised following a planned work schedule.
  • Writing and numeracy skills.
  • Familiarity with computers / keyboards / typing skills.
  • Word, Excel, Access – statistics, graphs, data analysis.
  • General awareness of importance of safety, and in particular safety issues of working in a laboratory.

Skills Required

About the role

As a Laboratory Technician Apprentice, you will support the day‑to‑day work of the laboratory, assisting with testing, preparing samples and maintaining a clean and safe working environment. You will be trained and supported throughout the apprenticeship. This is an exciting opportunity to develop technical skills that support major construction and infrastructure projects across the UK. You’ll learn how to test soils, aggregates, concrete, and other construction materials to help engineers make informed decisions about the safety and performance of buildings, roads, and infrastructure.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Prepare soil, aggregate, rock & concrete samples for testing.
  • Carry out moisture content, density, grading, and particle size tests.
  • Assist with sieve analysis and material classification testing.
  • Record and analyse laboratory results.
  • Operate specialist testing equipment.
  • Assist with equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Follow British Standards and laboratory procedures.
  • Support ISO quality management requirements.
  • Maintain accurate test records and reports.
  • Follow health and safety procedures at all times.
