Job Title: Trainee Technician
Job Purpose
To undertake on-the-job training as a Trainee Technician to support the requirements of a world-leading military aircraft simulation and engineering training centre located at RNAS Yeovilton.
Main Activities and Tasks

  • Observe, learn, and understand a wide range of engineering skills and processes under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
  • Demonstrate learned skills and processes as the training period progresses by working independently or with a team to undertake tasks as instructed, increasing overall contribution to the Merlin Commando Training Facility, Contract Logistic Support (CLS) team.
  • Undertake and successfully complete any identified formal training courses.
  • Learn and understand the importance of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Develop the hand skills to carry out maintenance on training devices, construct or modify apparatus and instruments from verbal instructions and technical drawings, for the Merlin Commando Training Facility, research, teaching, and student projects, to a high degree of precision.
  • Learn how to maintain workshop equipment and keep it in good repair.
  • Contribute to the management of spares, tools, and consumables for the Training Equipment.
  • Maintain a logbook over the duration of the apprenticeship period, recording projects undertaken and skills learned.
  • Maintain and ensure general good housekeeping of the workplace and training areas.
  • Maintain a smart appearance and act in a professional manner at all times.
  • Perform any other duties appropriate to the grade and role of the post holder.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths at Grade B and English at Grade C minimum.
  • Driving licence.
  • An ability to work to demanding deadlines in a customer-facing role.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with others.
  • Determination to contribute to the development of a groundbreaking Training Service, achieving the highest quality and standards.
  • Willingness to learn and take direction, with a strong drive to improve processes.
  • Proficient in PC literacy with an excellent understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) applications.
