The Service Architecture Lead is responsible for defining and governing service architecture for software-enabled products to ensure they are deployable, maintainable, recoverable, diagnosable, and service-ready across the full product lifecycle.
This role translates system-level service strategy into standards, requirements, reusable procedures, and service offerings that can be executed by engineering teams, service teams, and implementation resources across new product development and on-market products.
This position reports to the Sr.
Manager, GSRE Upstream & Automation and is part of Global Service engineering department located in Portsmouth, UK or Bangalore, India and will be an on-site role.
What You Will Do
- Define and maintain service architecture standards, design patterns, and guardrails across software-enabled products.
Drive standardization of deployment architectures, reference designs, and reusable assets (templates, checklists, tooling)
- Lead Service Design Reviews (SDRs) across NPD and lifecycle programs to ensure deployability, recoverability, diagnostics, and upgradeability
• Own core design domains including
- Field Installation & upgrade strategy
- Backup, restore & data integrity
- Crash recovery & resilience
- Diagnostics, logging, and observability
- IT/OT integration (networking, domain, security)
- Translate field and service requirements into technical architecture requirements early in product development
- Lead or direct work of cross-functional contributors without formal authority, including engineers and program stakeholders
- Provide technical direction and coaching to peers, contractors, and cross-functional NPD teams to ensure deliverables are standardized, reusable, scalable, and aligned to Cytiva service expectations.
Who You Are
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Automation, or a related technical discipline preferred; Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience will be considered.
- 10+ years of experience designing, deploying, supporting, or architecting complex software-enabled systems, automation platforms, industrial control systems, IT/OT environments, or enterprise software solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to apply systems engineering thinking to connect software, infrastructure, networking, data, cybersecurity, service, and lifecycle requirements into practical architecture solutions.
- Experience developing architecture standards, serviceability frameworks, deployment models, or lifecycle strategies that enable repeatable execution by engineering teams, service organizations, and external partners.
- Proven ability to lead through influence by translating technical vision into clear requirements, reusable standards, procedures, and work packages that others can execute.
- Broad technical knowledge across multiple service domains, including software deployment and upgrades, backup and recovery, IT/OT integration, industrial networking, historian platforms, diagnostics, observability, automation validation, or system resilience.
- Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements
- Ability to travel – up to 20% domestic and international
- Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to lift, move or carry equipment up to 25lb.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in
- Experience with industrial automation platforms and ecosystems, including Rockwell, Siemens, AVEVA, OPC UA, historians, or related IT/OT integration technologies.
- Experience developing or governing service readiness, lifecycle support, deployment, upgrade, backup/restore, or diagnostics standards for complex software-enabled products.
- Experience working in regulated or validated environments, including exposure to SAT, IQ/OQ, GMP, or automation validation practices.
