The BMS & EPMS Specialist (SME) is responsible for the installation and support of Data Center power monitoring and building management systems.

Role Purpose

As Cyrus One continues to grow its European portfolio, we require a technically credible Senior BMS/EPMS Specialist to act as the authority for the design, deployment, integration, commissioning, operational support and lifecycle management of BMS/EPMS platforms across our data centre estate.

The role will provide technical governance across new-build, expansion and live-site projects, ensuring systems are delivered in line with Cyrus One standards, operational and cyber security requirements, client commitments and critical-environment best practice.

Working closely with the internal European and US-based teams including Facilities Operations, Design & Construction, IT/Cyber Security and with external vendors, general contractors and clients, the role will support a consistent, secure and standards-led approach across the full project lifecycle.

Location and Working Pattern

The role will be based from the London head office, with a mixture of home working and travel across Cyrus One sites in the UK and Europe.

The role will support multiple concurrent projects and act as a technical escalation point for BMS/EPMS issues across live sites.

On-site presence will be required for critical activities, including design reviews, commissioning, handover, live-site works, incident response, vendor meetings and other business-critical requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical ownership, standards and roadmap
  • Act as technical owner and advocate for current and future BMS/EPMS systems across the portfolio.
  • Own and develop the BMS/EPMS roadmap in line with Cyrus One standards, EU/US requirements and Facilities Operations requirements.
  • Provide subject matter expert knowledge, guidance and leadership in the development and quality control of Cyrus One BMS/EPMS systems.
  • Develop, maintain and improve BMS/EPMS standards, specifications, guidelines and procedures for current and new sites.
  • Identify opportunities to improve monitoring, resilience, alarm management, data quality, operational visibility and technology performance.
  • Stay current with advances in equipment, software, cyber security, monitoring technologies, integration methods and industry best practice, and recommend updates to Cyrus One standards where appropriate.
  • Develop product and platform lifecycle plans to maintain resilience, security, supportability and operational continuity.
  • Design governance and project delivery
  • Own the technical governance of BMS/EPMS scope across assigned projects, ensuring designs, specifications, vendor submissions and delivery outputs meet Cyrus One standards.
  • Review and where required approve BMS/EPMS technical submissions, including control philosophies, cause-and-effect matrices, points schedules, graphics standards, alarm configuration, metering schedules, integration requirements, method statements and commissioning plans.
  • Guide implementation of BMS/EPMS systems, identifying risks to services, tenants and the business and ensuring implementation is completed in line with agreed standards and procedures.
  • Maintain oversight of live projects and work closely with assigned project managers to coordinate the timely delivery of design, installation, commissioning and handover activities.
  • Ensure designed BMS/EPMS systems meet applicable SLA, KPI, client and contractual requirements.
  • Identify design deviations, scope gaps, technical risks, commercial risks and delivery risks early, and escalate through the appropriate governance channels.
  • Support procurement and commercial teams with technical evaluation of vendor proposals, clarifications, exclusions, risks, quotations and change requests.
  • Commissioning, acceptance and handover
  • Lead or support technical reviews of factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT) and integrated systems testing (IST) activities for BMS/EPMS scope.
  • Ensure commissioning scripts validate control sequences, alarm routing, failover behaviour, resilience, redundancy, metering accuracy, graphics, trend data, user permissions and integrations with other operational platforms.
  • Witness critical BMS/EPMS commissioning activities where required and ensure defects are tracked, prioritised and closed before operational handover.
  • Ensure commissioning records, completion certificates and other acceptance evidence are signed, complete and provided in the required format.
  • Ensure complete and accurate handover documentation is provided, including as-built drawings, network diagrams, panel drawings, controller schedules, software backups, points lists, cause-and-effect matrices, alarm schedules, metering schedules, user access lists, O&M manuals, test records, commissioning certificates and training records.
  • Ensure BMS/EPMS asset and configuration information is suitable for ongoing maintenance, lifecycle planning, cyber security review and operational support.
  • Operational Resilience, Live-Site Control, OT Cyber Security & Support
  • Ensure all system changes, particularly those in live environments, follow Cyrus One change management processes and receive authorisation through the correct channels.
  • Ensure live-site works are planned and executed in accordance with approved methods of procedure (MOPs), risk assessment and method statements (RAMS), change control requirements and operational risk assessments.
  • Act as a Level 3 technical escalation point for BMS/EPMS incidents, defects, performance issues and recurring alarms across live operational sites.
  • Support root cause analysis for BMS/EPMS-related incidents, including control failures, communication failures, alarm failures, data loss, incorrect readings, integration issues and system availability issues.
  • Identify issues that may lead to unnecessary or premature failure of services, minimising risk, disruption and inconvenience to Cyrus One, clients and tenants.
  • Develop corrective action plans and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into standards, designs, maintenance plans and future project delivery.
  • Work closely with IT, Cyber Security and Operations to ensure BMS/EPMS platforms align with Cyrus One IT, OT and cyber security strategies.
  • Ensure BMS/EPMS platforms are designed, deployed and maintained in line with OT cyber security requirements such as user access control, logging, backups, patching, vulnerability management and incident response.
  • Ensure vendors comply with Cyrus One cyber security, access control, change management and documentation requirements.
  • Support lifecycle planning for BMS/EPMS hardware, software, operating systems, firmware, licences, certificates, backups and disaster recovery requirements.
  • Work with internal groups and external strategic partners to develop standards and maintain harmonisation across the European portfolio.
  • Data, reporting and continuous improvement
  • Ensure BMS/EPMS data quality supports operational reporting, client reporting, SLA/KPI compliance, energy management, capacity planning and sustainability reporting.
  • Support the development of metering, trending, alarming and reporting standards for power, cooling, environmental and energy performance data.
  • Work with Operations, Engineering and Energy/Sustainability teams to improve monitoring of PUE, cooling performance, load profiles, power quality, environmental conditions and abnormal operating patterns.
  • Proactively identify areas of improvement to promote best-in-class monitoring systems and support Cyrus One in operating as an industry market leader.
  • Stakeholder, vendor and communication management
  • Develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders and engage the appropriate management teams or groups for issue escalation and resolution.
  • Work closely with external parties, including preferred vendors, product manufacturers, general contractors, clients and assigned project management resources.
  • Facilitate efficient communication across all levels of a project to support consistency, project/programme goals and early recognition of opportunities, risks or complications.
  • Maintain clear visibility of BMS/EPMS scope boundaries between Technology, Construction, Operations, IT, vendors and general contractors.
  • Collate lessons learned and socialise findings within the Technology team and other relevant stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to stay organised and effective in a dynamic, multi-site and fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to travel frequently across the UK and Europe.
  • Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a technically credible BMS/EPMS specialist with experience in critical environments.

They will be comfortable reviewing designs, challenging vendors, supporting live operations, managing technical risk and working across multiple stakeholder groups.

They will be pragmatic, detail-focused and able to balance project delivery pressure with operational resilience, compliance and client commitments.

They will be able to work independently, influence without direct authority and communicate complex technical issues in a clear and actionable way.

  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in BMS, EPMS, controls, automation for critical infrastructure systems, ideally within the data centre industry or another mission-critical / regulated environment.
  • Demonstrable experience with the design, installation, commissioning, integration and operational support of BMS and/or EPMS platforms.
  • Strong understanding of critical mechanical and electrical infrastructure monitoring, including cooling systems, LV/MV electrical systems, UPS, generators, switchgear, meters and environmental monitoring.
  • Experience reviewing technical designs, control philosophies, points schedules, SOO, Des Ops, cause-and-effect documentation, alarm strategies, graphics, network architectures and commissioning scripts.
  • Experience managing multiple project activities and workstreams across sites and countries simultaneously.
  • Understanding of live-environment change control, risk assessment, MOPs, commissioning governance and operational readiness.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • B. S. Degree in a computer-related field.

May substitute equivalent work-related experience for degree.

  • 5 years directly managing staff responsible for power monitoring and building management systems.
  • Experience with designing and deploying power monitoring and building management systems in mission critical or high availability environments.
