6-12 month contract, highly competitive rate, inside IR35.

Are you a Systems Engineer with deep experience in IVD or medical device development, looking to play a key role in bringing a revolutionary new diagnostic platform to market? This is an opportunity to join a fast-growing, multidisciplinary team working at the forefront of molecular diagnostics, where you’ll shape system architecture, lead technical problem-solving, and influence the direction of an entire platform.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you’ll work across engineering, science, software, and quality teams to define system requirements, develop system architecture, and ensure robust traceability across the full product lifecycle. You’ll also guide and mentor colleagues as the team advances a complex electro-mechanical instrument and consumable system through development. You’ll be hands-on with system modelling, experiment design, integration work, and the development of innovative approaches to solve challenging technical problems. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in dynamic, fast-paced environments and enjoys working on cutting-edge technology with real-world impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define system requirements, system architecture, and risk/requirements traceability for a next-generation IVD platform.
  • Work closely with external developers and contractors to ensure clear communication of system needs.
  • Lead design reviews and contribute to product development planning.
  • Produce and maintain key system design documentation and traceability matrices.
  • Mentor colleagues across a multidisciplinary engineering and scientific team.
  • Apply systems engineering principles to create reliable, cost-effective, and compliant designs.
  • Design, execute, and analyse experiments to verify system requirements.
  • Define and negotiate engineering trade-offs to achieve optimal system performance.
  • Lead system integration efforts and champion best practice in Systems, Reliability, Risk, Usability and Requirements Engineering.
  • Keep abreast of state-of-the-art developments in systems engineering and reliability.
  • Conduct technical reviews and contribute to technical strategy.
  • Develop novel approaches to overcome product development challenges.
  • Maintain quality records across chemistry, consumables, and instrument activities.
  • Ensure documentation complies with ISO 13485 requirements in collaboration with Quality.

About You

You’ll bring a strong background in systems engineering within IVD, diagnostics or closely regulated medical technologies — plus the ability to influence, collaborate, and drive technical rigour.

Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in engineering, chemistry, biology, or a related field; Master’s preferred.
  • Proven experience in IVD, medical device, or similar regulated environments.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Strong root-cause analysis skills across electro-mechanical and instrument systems.
  • Experience applying standards such as ISO 13485, IEC 62304, 21 CFR 820, IVDR, IEC 62366.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14971 risk management (FMEA, FTA etc.).
  • Broad engineering understanding (mechanical systems, pumps, actuators, electrical, thermal, optics, data analysis).
  • Experience with process development and optimisation is beneficial.
  • Exposure to model-based systems engineering tools is a plus.
  • Comfortable in fast-paced, evolving environments with multiple priorities.

What’s on Offer

  • Work on a cutting-edge diagnostic platform with real clinical impact.
  • Join a collaborative, high-growth team shaping next-gen IVD technology.
  • Competitive salary + benefits (details available on request).
  • Hybrid working, London-based.
