The role involves making a long-term difference to the people and environment of Wales, with a focus on protecting rare species and supporting sustainable management of natural resources. The appointed candidate will provide technical expertise and guidance related to various protected species, including Bats, Great Crested Newt, Dormice, Otters, Natterjack Toad, Sand Lizard, Red Squirrel, Pine Marten, and Water Voles.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical advice on licence applications, amendments, and related consultations to support licence determination.
  • Advising on development projects, including nationally significant infrastructure proposals.
  • Contributing to Local Development Plans and other sub-regional strategies.
  • Preparing information for challenges against development planning advice or licensing determinations.
  • Delivering the Domestic Bat Advice Service.
  • Supporting the management of designated sites where Protected Species are present.
  • Contributing to multifunctional place planning such as Area Statements and biodiversity resilience plans.
  • Providing technical support to the Police in investigating Protected Species offences.
  • Contributing to surveillance and monitoring programmes.
  • Maintaining effective customer relationships to ensure efficient delivery of advice services.
  • Producing auditable records of actions and outcomes.
  • Undertaking health and safety duties appropriate to the post.
  • Participating in incident response activities.
  • Performing any other reasonable duties requested commensurate with the grade of this role.

Qualifications and skills required include:

  • Knowledge of ecology and conservation of protected species.
  • A working knowledge of wildlife legislation.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills.
  • Able to negotiate and work with a wide range of people.
  • Able to work effectively in team situations.
  • Legally able to drive a car in the UK.

Welsh Language level requirements: Essential Level A1 - Entry level.
