We are seeking a new treasurer for our Oxford-based cycling charity. We advocate for better cycling infrastructure and safety initiatives and aim to get more people cycling in the city. We have two members of staff and a group of committed and friendly trustees. Come join us!
What difference will you make?
As the treasurer, you will help us make the most of the money we receive from membership fees, donations and grants to achieve our goal of more people cycling more often - and more safely - in the city and beyond. We believe that good financial management is key to having the greatest impact. You will also ensure that our accounts are included in our annual report and explained to members at our AGM.
The time commitment from our treasurer is not onerous as we use a payroll company and basic bookkeeping is managed by our staff. We and other active travel groups seek to influence public bodies but also to work on the ground to make life better for cyclists across the city - including in the areas with relatively low participation in cycling. Trustees are involved in developing our vision and strategy and many choose to be active in other areas - such as manning information stalls at events - but this is entirely up to you.
What are we looking for?
Obviously, we are looking for someone with financial experience and acumen. Ideally, you would live in or around Oxford and be committed to our vision of a cycling-friendly city.
What will you be doing?
Cyclox, Oxford’s cycling advocacy charity, is looking for a new treasurer, following the retirement of Ben Sawyer. Our treasurer is responsible for the financial oversight of the charity and preparing the annual accounts but much day-to-day work, such as payroll and dealing with invoices, is done by our staff or contracted out. One of our staff members also takes the lead on fundraising. The treasurer’s role is a voluntary one but reasonable expenses are covered. You will also have the opportunity to shape the future of a vibrant, growing charity. The treasurer does not need to be an accountant but must have a reasonable grasp of figures. They would normally also become a trustee and attend around 10 board meetings a year, either in person or online. Ideally, they would be based in or close to Oxford and committed to our aims of getting more people to cycle in Oxford, more often and more safely.
Our mission
We work towards our mission by:
- Advocating: We lobby key decision makers such as the city and county councils and the two universities to raise awareness of cycling and to call for better cycling provision.
- Collaborating: We work with local active travel groups, the universities and other partners.
- Engaging: We listen to and learn from our members and communities.
- Taking action: We work with schools and other parts of the community to offer practical help to those who face barriers to cycling. This work is often grant-funded.
You can learn more about us at www.cyclox.org.
First Steps
If you feel this role may be for you, the first step is to contact our chair, Ian Loader, for an informal discussion. If you then want to progress further, we will invite you to meet other trustees and possibly attend a board meeting.
