About the role:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Engineer to to spearhead our in-house drone-enabled Ultrasonic Testing (UT) operations. This is a key role in shaping the future of remote inspection technology and ensuring alignment with industry standards.
In particular, the Lead UT Engineer will be responsible for driving all aspects of NDT (Ultrasonic Testing) initiatives internally, training of the engineering team, acting subject matter expert as well as leading the accreditation process requirements for class societies such as ABS, DNV, Lloyds and B.V.
Practical fieldwork and data collection will include aerial surveys, inspections, mapping and emissions monitoring in diverse environments such as onshore industrial/utilities facilities, offshore installations and confined spaces. The role will come with significant travel requirements and potential long periods away from home.
Responsibilities:
Lead UT Inspection
Engineer:
Report to the Technical Manager with the delivery of all aspects of the oil, gas, marine and other engineering business within the Company, not limited to:
o Preparation and co-ordination of field work
o Data management
o Delivery of completed work-scopes
• Lead
our UT certification efforts, including liaising with class societies, compiling documentation and procedures, and supporting audit processes. Solid understanding of class society requirements (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, BV) will be seen as a bonus.
• Serve as the in-house UT subject matter expert, providing guidance, training and support across internal teams and participating in business development discussions as needed.
• Maintain and manage all UT-related documentation, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
• Take part in field deployments, including offshore, onshore and international projects, which often could take place over the weekend.
• Produce high-quality inspection reports, covering both visual inspections and UT measurement data. Conduct quality control and assurance of inspection data, reviewing reports and findings to ensure accuracy and reliability.
• Drive continuous improvement, demonstrating initiative and a proactive mindset to help grow and improve our inspection services.
• Maintain and manage all UT-related documentation, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance.
• Receptive to learning how to fly a drone and getting GVC license, with the goal of integrating UT expertise into our advanced drone inspection capabilities.
• Operate a payload control system on the UAS and capturing high-quality data
• Ensure all inspection data collected is of the highest quality, accurate, concise and correctly referenced for presentation & reporting purposes
• Assess and edit images or video footage for structural defects, damage or hazards
• Deliver presentations of inspection results when required, onsite or through video calls
• Weekly in-person attendance at office (minimum 3 times per week in our Ratho HQ office)
• Any other reasonable duty as requested
Who would be a good fit to our role:
Essential Qualifications/Experience
- Proven experience performing ultrasonic inspections with a strong grasp of relevant techniques, procedures and equipment. Must be capable of accurately interpreting results and delivering clear, actionable recommendations
- Desirable: Engineering Degree, ASME Level 1 Plant inspector cert, Offshore certs (BOSIET etc), Medical.
Data:
- Excellent data management
- Project management experience
- Excellent organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
Imagery:
- Knowledge in photography: f-stop, ISO, shutter speed etc.
- Knowledge in basic photo editing
Reporting:
- Understands materials damage mechanisms, not limited to coating degradation, corrosion and cracking of materials. Able to highlight and describe defects and hazards
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy – pride in report writing
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computer-based systems: Comfortable using computer software and systems for data analysis, reporting, and project management. Experience with inspection software and digital reporting tools is an advantage
