An established UK organisation operating at scale is seeking a Head of Engineering to lead its engineering and data capability during a critical growth phase. This is a newly reshaped role, and it is heavily leadership focused. There is no expectation to code day-to-day. You will bring sufficient technical depth to challenge senior engineers, set direction and ensure delivery aligns with business priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership for software and data engineering across multiple squads
  • Manage 30 across several teams
  • Set and maintain engineering standards, delivery practices and governance
  • Act as the senior engineering interface to the wider business, ensuring technology delivers measurable value
  • Lead delivery across legacy and modern platforms, balancing transformation with stability
  • Support strategic initiatives, including large-scale bids and regulatory-driven programmes
  • Develop and mentor engineering leaders while fostering a high-performance, accountable culture

Technology Environment

  • Core: .NET, SQL Server (legacy and modern estates)
  • Data & Cloud: Azure, Databricks
  • Architecture: Multiple platforms and systems undergoing consolidation and modernisation

About You

  • Proven experience as a Head of Engineering, Head of Data Engineering or an equivalent senior leadership role
  • Strong data engineering background is essential
  • Comfortable operating in complex, multi-system environments
  • Experienced people leader with a hands-off, strategic management style
  • Confident challenging technical decisions without needing to be hands-on
  • Commercially minded with experience delivering technology outcomes to the business
