We are seeking to recruit two Research Fellows in Marine Biogeochemistry to undertake research into the processes controlling biological productivity and trace element supply in the Southern Ocean. These full‑time, fixed‑term positions will run for 27 months.

Location: Based within the School of Ocean and Earth Science (SOES) of the University of Southampton and located at the National Oceanography Southampton (NOCS).

About the role: The role will focus on the analysis of samples and observational and experimental data from the NERC funded “Iron and Manganese Impacts on the Future of Southern Ocean Ecosystems (Iron‑Man)” project. You will be expected to undertake sample and data analyses originating from the recent research expedition and disseminate key aspects of the research project related to phytoplankton ecophysiology, trace element supply and biogeochemical cycling.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze samples and observational and experimental data from the Southern Ocean.
  • Disseminate key aspects of the research related to phytoplankton ecophysiology, trace element supply, and biogeochemical cycling.
  • Collaborate with a large interdisciplinary oceanographic team comprising phytoplankton and zooplankton ecologists, nutrient and trace metal biogeochemists, and ocean modelling experts.
  • Explore your own research interests within the broader constraints of the overall project objectives under the guidance of the project (co-)PIs.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in biological oceanography / marine biogeochemistry (or a related field).
  • Knowledge or experience of at‑sea observational and/or experimental work related to phytoplankton/microbial ecology, physiology, and trace elements (advantageous).
  • Strong quantitative and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct innovative research resulting in publications in international refereed journals.

Benefits & Support:

  • Supportive and rewarding environment for further development of your knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Opportunity to work closely with scientists at partner institutions across the UK and internationally.
  • Exposure to a diverse, interdisciplinary research team.
  • Generous holiday allowance and additional university closure days.
  • Flexible working approach.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: We are committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive and aim to foster a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity within our consortium. We welcome candidates from any and all backgrounds and particularly encourage applicants with characteristics that may currently be underrepresented in ocean sciences including, but not limited to, women, individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, LGBTQ+ individuals and people with disabilities.
