The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking a Research Fellow in Palaeoceanography and Earth System Model Development. The successful applicant will work on the development and application of the cGENIE Earth system model on multiple sub‑project(s) of the ERC grant “Determining the drivers of extinction across space and time”, under the supervision of Dr Richard Stockey and in collaboration with Prof Erin Saupe's team at the University of Oxford. This is a relatively short‑term, specialist Earth system modelling position with a duration of 15 months.
Responsibilities:
- Generate reconstructive models of 3D ocean biogeochemistry for the last ~800,000 years and the Phanerozoic (~540 million years).
- Conduct Earth system model development to improve representation of ocean biogeochemistry in space and time for these intervals.
- Integrate key components of Earth system evolution on timescales, linking model output to geochemical data and working with astronomical forcings.
- Manage own research activities, contribute to academic publications and present research ideas and findings.
Qualifications:
- Relevant PhD / DPhil in a related field – current or near completion.
- Prior experience in intermediate‑complexity Earth system modelling.
- Experience integrating Earth system components and linking outputs to geochemical data.
- Strong subject‑specific expertise in palaeoceanography and Earth system modelling.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to represent the research group in meetings and discussions.
