Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position within the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. The work will involve the development of numerical simulations of high voltage cable systems, with the results written up as project deliverables and publications. These findings will directly contribute to the safe operation of the National Supergrid, contributing to the low‑carbon future of the UK.

The successful candidate will have, or be near to completion of, a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with a proven track record of publishing research findings. The candidate must be motivated, able to work independently using their initiative, and able to communicate well within a team. You must be able to organise time, tasks and responsibilities with other team members. Experience with numerical methods, either analytically or by using software (e.g., COMSOL, MAGNET, Ansys) is advantageous, but not essential.

Responsibilities
  • Develop numerical simulations of high‑voltage cable systems.
  • Prepare project deliverables and publications based on simulation results.
  • Contribute findings to support the safe operation of the National Supergrid.
Qualifications
  • Near completion of a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven track record of publishing research findings.
  • Motivated and able to work independently, using initiative.
  • Strong communication skills within a team.
  • Effective time‑management and organisational skills for coordinating tasks with team members.
  • Experience with numerical methods and software such as COMSOL, MAGNET, Ansys is a plus.
