The CORNERSTONE Photonics Innovation Centre (C-PIC) team at the University of Southampton has a shared vision: to take silicon photonics technologies from research labs to everyday life by enabling ubiquitous silicon photonics solutions. We are seeking an experienced PDK Engineer with a technical background in graphene and/or silicon photonics for our role in the EU‑funded project, PIXEurope.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the Process Design Kit (PDK) and characterise graphene on silicon photonics chips for the PIXEurope project.
  • Attend European project meetings and represent the project at conferences and events.
  • Collaborate with the PDK team to develop the CORNERSTONE platform.
  • Work with project partners and the internal process fabrication team to develop technology.
  • Ensure Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is embedded in outreach, training and marketing activities.
  • Manage relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including UK and EU PIXEurope consortium partners.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in European (or equivalent complex large consortia) projects and photonics device design, mask layout and device characterisation.
  • Proven track‑record in PDK design with demonstrated experience in establishing a technology service.
  • PhD in silicon photonics or graphene is desirable.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a large consortium.

Employment Terms

This position is initially funded until 31 May 2030, with the possibility of a further extension depending on the success of the role.
