Southampton Education School is a flourishing centre of research and teaching excellence. It has a well-established programme of Initial Teacher Education in both primary and secondary PGCE, rated Outstanding in all areas (Ofsted, 2023)
We are looking to appoint an experienced and well qualified Geography Teacher Educator for our PGCE Secondary Geography programme. The position is permanent and is offered on a full-time basis, with the possibility of job share.
The Secondary PGCE programmes at the University of Southampton deliver Initial Teacher Education within the University and work in partnership with over 100 local secondary schools. Our programme provides thorough preparation for teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards, while our research-led philosophy develops teachers whose independent and creative approach brings about high-quality learning and teaching.
We are seeking to appoint a person who would be responsible for teaching and supporting trainee teachers in the curriculum area of Geography. The person appointed would be an expert who has recent and relevant secondary teaching experience and who would be able to design and lead the Geography PGCE course, as well as pedagogical sessions in a cross-curricular context. As well as planning and teaching sessions at the University they would also be expected to visit trainees in schools in order to monitor and moderate progress. There would also be an expectation that the appointee would be able to contribute to other areas of Initial Teacher Education and Southampton Education School as required and as appropriate to their skills and experiences: this is likely to include substantial contributions to PGCE Primary and to undergraduate and postgraduate leadership and management modules.
Role
The successful applicant will be expected to work as part of a team with colleagues in ITE. The post includes teaching, visiting trainees in their placement school and observing and assessing the quality of their teaching in relation to the Teachers’ Standards. The role requires liaison with trainees’ mentors in partnership schools and assessing trainees’ work at Masters level. Working in collaboration with colleagues, you will have responsibility for:
- Course design, management and teaching in primary and secondary Geography.
- Arranging and participating in observations at trainees’ placement schools in order to observe trainees teaching across primary and secondary phases
- Assessing trainees in their teaching, and in their written assignments
- Maintaining records and paperwork as required
The role will therefore include regular travel to our network of placement schools. We are interested in applications from individuals for 1.0 FTE and those interested in job share.
The successful candidate will ideally be in post by 01/01/2026 with interviews being held in early October 2026.
If you would value an informal preliminary discussion, please contact Lucy Hoyes (tel. 023 8059 1169 or email L.A.Hoyes@soton.ac.uk )
- An enhanced DBS check is required for this role.
