As an Operational Technology (OT) Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of developing, reviewing, and maintaining the technical standards that ensure substations are safe, reliable, and fit for a digital future. You’ll support the selection and technical assurance of substation control equipment, helping deliver a coherent, modernised control system to work towards Net Zero.

Responsibilities

  • Creating detailed specifications for substation control system equipment, such as Remote Terminal Units (RTUs).
  • Developing standardised assurance test plans, and evaluating sample products against those plans.
  • Producing AutoCAD drawings for standardised control cabinets and associated equipment.
  • Designing, developing, and testing standard configurations for substation control systems to deliver consistent, repeatable, and effective designs.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the operation of electricity distribution networks, and a good understanding of statutory, regulatory & licence requirements, industry codes, networks and engineering standards.
  • Extensive experience of designing and/or commissioning substation control systems and telecontrol/automation equipment.
  • Familiarity with typical UK distribution network operator practice is preferable.
  • Knowledge on the implementation of substation telecontrol using DNP3 protocol is essential. IEC61850 is desirable.
  • Configuration experience of RTUs, with a preference towards Schneider Talus, Hitachi/ABB RTU520-560 series, ZIV XCell and SEL Axion/RTAC.
  • Experience producing engineering schematics using AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of substation protection & control schemes would be desirable.
  • Capability to implement cyber security best practice within an Operational Technology environment.
