Dental Nurse, Emergency Dental Service in Pontypridd

The post holder will provide a comprehensive range of dental nurse skills to support clinicians in the provision of quality dental care to all groups of patients. The post holder will offer clinical and chairside support within the Emergency Dental Service, be expected to have an in-depth knowledge of all dental procedures, and manage surgeries independently within the Health Board's guidelines. Reception duties and other activities are also required as needed. All activities are governed by professional policies and procedures. The post holder works independently and is responsible for their own actions when delivering dental nursing care.

Main duties of the job:

• Organise the surgery and ensure accurate preparation and presentation of appropriate materials and equipment with a high degree of precision.
• Provide chair-side assistance and four-handed dentistry throughout the patient's treatment.
• Maintain high standards of infection control, PPE and cleanliness in line with current codes of practice.
• Ensure the safe disposal of clinical waste in accordance with the Health Board's infection control policy.
• Assist in the management of medical and dental emergencies, if required.
• Participate in ordering and maintaining clinical stock levels.
• Process and develop radiographs, complying with current IRMER regulations.
• Chaperone patients and staff.
• Answer queries in person and by telephone.
• Provide advice on a wide range of dental procedures, adjusting information as required to address patients' level of understanding.
• Offer pre- and post-operative advice on dental care to patients, communicating reassurance and information.

Job responsibilities:

• Create and maintain paper and electronic patient records, distribute medical history forms, and prepare FP17 forms, obtaining signatures from patients or significant others.
• Ensure patient records are securely maintained and confidentiality is protected.
• Plan and maintain stock levels of clinical instrument cassettes and materials required for the clinical session.
• Manage own workload efficiently, organising routine and access sessions.
• Provide clinical and chair-side support to clinicians within the Emergency Dental Service.
• Follow decontamination procedures to maintain compliance with Health Board policies and procedures.

Welsh skills – desirable:

This post is advertised as Welsh desirable. While not essential, speaking and listening skills at Level 3 (CEFR B2) or above are an advantage for short‑listing and selection.

Person Specification:

• National Certificate for Dental Nurses or NVQ Diploma in Dental Nursing & GDC registration.
• Experience in a role in a dental practice or clinic environment.
• Good verbal and communication skills, able to communicate at all levels.
• Understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
• Up‑to‑date knowledge of dental nursing procedures.
• Knowledge of patient management systems.
• Experience with decontamination procedures.
• Experience working in a quality system environment.

Skills:

• Welsh language skills in speaking/listening at Level 3 or above.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check:

The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, and a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service is required to check for any previous criminal convictions.

Salary: £28,819 to £31,626 a year (pro‑rata to 10 hours per month, plus weekend enhancements).
