The closing date is 15 February 2026. The post-holder will join the existing group of Acute Physicians and will be based primarily at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. It is essential that the post-holder has good leadership qualities to help further develop Acute Medicine services at RGH and across CTMUHB in line with the aspirations of the Health Board. The post-holder will be expected to work closely and maintain good communication with colleagues from other health care professions and other medical specialties. Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply. This post is fixed term for up to 12 months to cover maternity leave.
Main duties of the job:
- Supporting the Acute Medical team on a day-to-day operational basis and carrying a clinical caseload.
- Working closely with other key stakeholders and developing Acute Medicine services which meet core outcomes across the Health Board.
- Supporting and developing effective communications between all clinical stakeholders.
- Working closely with the Clinical and Directorate managers to deliver effective and appropriate Acute Medical care services to residents of Cwm Taf.
- Supporting staff members within the Acute Medical care service to increase their knowledge and skills within their professional boundaries.

Job responsibilities:
Currently, the Acute Physicians work in three areas. These are: the acute in-take including the morning post-take ward round of patients admitted overnight, the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (ambulatory care patients) and an acute medical ward round of those patients admitted under the acute team who are likely to go home within 72 hours. The Acute Medical Unit is well supported by the specialties of cardiology, gastroenterology, respiratory, and diabetes and endocrine who will also have patients in the AMU directly under their care. There is twice weekly input from neurology and OP clinics from nephrology. The aim is to cover the in-take from 8am until 9pm all weekdays and non-resident cover after 9pm before extending into the weekends. Annual Appraisal is a requirement of the post. The post holder must be revalidated in accordance with the GMC requirement. The post holder will be responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing and participating in postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally. All Consultants teach and train at postgraduate education and often at undergraduate level. There is a very active Postgraduate Training Department, which organises medical education. Strong links have been established with the University of Wales College of Medicine in the teaching of undergraduate students. Many Consultants can be named educational or clinical supervisor for students at different points in their training.
Person Specification:
Teaching / Research Experience:
- Experience of supervising Foundation Trainees, Internal Medicine trainees and Specialty Trainees.
- Ability to teach clinical skills.
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Involvement with HEIW/ RCP.
Education / Qualifications and training:
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Acute Medicine and General Internal Medicine (GIM) or Entry to the GMC Specialist Register via the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
- Possession of MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification.
Clinical Experience:
- At least 2 years' experience in General Internal Medicine in a middle grade/senior clinical role.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of medical problems.
- Ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team including junior doctors and therapists.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
- Having experience of setting up a service.
Management and Communication:
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate drive, achievement and innovation to establish and develop new and innovative service.
