Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine & General Medicine

This is a new Consultant post in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine within Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, based primarily at Prince Charles Hospital. The role expands the current respiratory team to five consultants and supports the delivery of acute and outpatient respiratory services, ward-based care, diagnostic procedures, and general medical on-call commitments.
The successful candidate will join a supportive, enthusiastic, and forward‑thinking multidisciplinary team, working closely with consultants, nurses, physiologists, pharmacists, and wider MDT colleagues. The post offers a balance of respiratory ward work, outpatient clinics, procedural sessions, specialist referrals, and SPA time. There are also opportunities to contribute to service development, research, education, and flexible working arrangements.

Main duties of the job
- Provide consultant cover to ward 12 (respiratory) in Prince Charles Hospital.
- Provide consultant cover for respiratory outliers.
- Provide specialist reviews of patients under other specialties needing respiratory input.
- Contribute to respiratory endoscopy: covering a weekly bronchoscopy list on a 1:5 basis, and cover for EBUS if desired by the candidate.
- Contribute to respiratory outpatients.
- Attendance at the lung cancer MDT is not mandatory but is welcome.
- Participate in an on‑call rota for general medicine, on a 1:14 basis.
- Provide clinical +/- educational supervision of trainees in Respiratory medicine, Internal Medicine and the Foundation Programme.
- Support the resident doctor team in Respiratory Medicine – 2 registrars, 2 IMT doctors, 3 FP doctors, and one physician associate.
- Lead and develop the Respiratory Service.
- Participate in annual job planning and appraisal. Maintain continuing professional development for successful revalidation.
- Undertake statutory and mandatory training, as well as essential role training as determined by the department and organisation.

Person Specification
Teaching /Research Experience
- Experience of supervising Trainees
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Publications in peer reviewed journal
- Involvement with Deanery/ RCP
- Involvement with developing other specialities (AHPs, ANPs, PAs etc)
Education/ Qualifications and training
- Full MRCP (UK)
- Higher degree in a relevant area, e.g. MD or PhD
Clinical Experience
- Completion of Higher Speciality Training in Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine, or equivalent experience gained in another role
- Ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team including junior doctors and therapists
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Experience of service improvement/development
- Experience in active contribution to clinical governance
Management and administrative experience
- Ability to run an efficient and effective acute service
- Ability to organise and manage care of patients within both Acute unit and outpatient areas
- Experience of audit/quality improvement
- Demonstrate drive, achievement and innovation to establish and develop innovative services
