Welsh Skills Desirable

This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. This doesn’t mean essential; whilst the candidate doesn’t need to have skills in Welsh, we’ll consider it an advantage when short‑listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t 'fluency', just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means basic conversations with patients about their everyday health.

This role is offered as a fully qualified Band 6, or as a development Band 6 ANNEX 21 post. Applications from therapists who do not meet the full criteria of the Band 6 JD/PS, but are looking for a development post are welcomed and encouraged, and will be remunerated under Annex 21 of the A4C T&Cs. Completion of the qualification/learning and achievement of postgraduate experience is a requirement of the contract of employment for Annex 21 candidates.

Training and Remuneration

During this 36‑month training period, salary will be paid in accordance with Annex 21 of the Terms and Conditions as follows:

  • Months 1 – 12 of the training period will be paid at 65% of the top of Band 6 pay scale;
  • Months 13 – 24 of the training period will be paid at 70% of the top of Band 6 pay scale;
  • Months 25 – 36 of the training period will be paid at 75% of the top of Band 6 pay scale.

Upon successful attainment of the identified qualification/experience/competencies, even if sooner than the 36‑month allocated timeframe, the post holder will automatically move to the Band 6 as they will then meet the full KSF outline of this role and be expected to undertake all duties within the Job Description as indicated.

NOTE: There will be some circumstances where current staff apply for these posts, and their new trainee salary will be below that of their current salary. To aid both the recruitment and development of staff it is recommended that staff across NHS Wales should have continuity of pay for the duration of the training to avoid financial detriment. This should apply when staff take up training posts both within and across NHS Wales organisations.

Following this training, the remuneration will be the bottom of Band 6, again without financial detriment. We reserve the right to close a vacancy early or withdraw an advertisement to accommodate the redeployment of internal staff into suitable roles. All posts are subject to relevant checks, including a Disclosure and Barring Service check and, where required, Professional Registration verification.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome applications from individuals within protected groups as outlined in the Equality Act 2010. This includes, but is not limited to, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/reassignment, race/nationality, religion/belief, disability, pregnancy and maternity, and marriage and civil partnership. We also warmly welcome applications from members of the Armed Forces community.

Applicants who are not UK or Republic of Ireland nationals will require sponsorship to obtain either a Health and Care Visa or a Skilled Worker Visa unless they already hold permission to work via another route. Prospective applicants should self‑assess their eligibility for sponsorship by visiting the UK Government's Work in the UK guidance. Applications are welcome in either Welsh or English, with no preference given to the language used.
