- Job Summary
The Associate Director – Health, Safety & Wellbeing is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, operational oversight and continuous improvement of health, safety and wellbeing performance across the organisation, specifically Canary Wharf operations which includes but is not limited to the estate, retail, commercial buildings, vertus and southbank place.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the role contributes to business-wide strategy, leads cross-functional initiatives, and ensures that robust systems, culture and behaviours are embedded across the estate.
The role plays a key part in driving commercial, operational and cultural outcomes, ensuring alignment with CWG’s objectives, values and regulatory responsibilities

- Main Responsibilities
- Lead, develop and inspire the CWG Operations HSW team, building capability, succession and sustained high performance.
- Champion CWG values, wellbeing and a positive, proactive safety culture across the organisation.
- Influence and hold senior stakeholders accountable for HSW performance and standards.
- Attract, develop and retain diverse, high-calibre talent.
- Provide visible leadership to embed expectations, accountability and consistent performance standards.
- Oversee the identification, assessment and control of significant risks across CWG Operations.
- Ensure effective audit, inspection and assurance programmes are in place to drive continuous improvement and compliance with ISO 45001.
- Maintain oversight of compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks, including CDM Regulations.
- Ensure client duties under CDM are effectively discharged across CWG Operations, and support compliance with client, designer and principal contractor duties where applicable.
- Oversee incident management, notification and investigation processes, ensuring root causes are identified and organisational learning embedded.
- Ensure HSW is fully embedded within operational activities, projects and contractor management across CWG Operations.
- Drive consistent standards and performance across business areas, aligning with CWG Group requirements.
- Establish, monitor and report on performance metrics and KPIs to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Support major projects, tenders and mobilisation activities to ensure HSW is embedded from inception.
- Contribute to operational and commercial performance by balancing risk management, safety outcomes and efficient delivery.
- Provide clear, accurate and insight-led assurance to senior leadership on HSW performance and risk exposure.
- Lead and deliver HSW improvement and transformation programmes across CWG Operations.
- Drive innovation in systems, processes and ways of working.
- Promote and ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement of the CWG Integrated Management System (IMS) and ISO 45001 framework.
- Act as a visible champion for change, embedding a culture of accountability, transparency and continuous improvement.
- Develop and maintain strong, credible relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, contractors and partners.
- Communicate effectively at all levels, including Executive and Board stakeholders.
- Influence behaviours and decision-making to ensure HSW considerations are prioritised across the organisation.
- Represent CWG Operations externally, promoting best practice and enhancing organisational reputation.
- Foster collaborative working relationships with operational teams and contractors to support safe delivery.
- Lead the development of HSW policies, standards and procedures aligned to CWG Group frameworks.
- Ensure effective delivery of training, awareness and engagement programmes.
- Maintain and enhance the CWG Integrated Management System.
- Act as a subject matter expert in health, safety and wellbeing across CWG and CWG operations.
- Deputise for the Director of Health, Safety & Wellbeing where required.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested.
Person Specification
- Degree, NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent professional qualification.
- Chartered membership of IOSH or IIRSM.
- Significant experience in leading health and safety within complex construction or operational environments.
- Experience operating at a senior level, influencing across functions and disciplines.
- Proven track record in delivering performance improvement and organisational change.
- Ability to contribute to strategic planning and translate vision into delivery.
- Proven ability to lead across functional boundaries and influence senior stakeholders.
- Ability to build trust, credibility and alignment across teams.
- Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and industry best practice.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
