Project Engineering Role

As Project Engineer, you will be part of the Engineering & Technical function within the Civil Works Programme, reporting to the Technical & Engineering Manager. The role primarily supports activities within the Nuclear Island, working closely with relevant technical and delivery stakeholders. The scope of the role is expected to evolve over time and may extend to supporting other programme areas as project needs develop. The role requires engagement with stakeholders such as SZC Civil Works Programme, Site Establishment and Off‑Site Infrastructure, NI and CIBOP Programmes.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Support the definition, validation, and acceptance of SZC Technical Requirements and Specifications, working closely with EDF Nuclear Services and the SZC Design Authority.
  • Manage and progress technical Open Points and Design Changes through SZC technical governance, including Replication Principles, Technical Direction Forum (TDF), No Change Committee (NCC), and Non‑Permanent Works Change Committee (NPWCC).
  • Provide Design Technical Assurance across the end‑to‑end design lifecycle, ensuring SZC acceptance through structured reviews, surveillance activities, and formal approvals.
  • Support technical risk management in accordance with SZC Risk Management Processes, identifying, assessing, and mitigating design and delivery risks.
  • Assist the Technical & Engineering Manager by providing technical input and responses for Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, and General Communications from the design supply chain.
  • Act as a key technical interface between the Design Supply Chain and SZC/Responsible Designer stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and manage technical interfaces with internal and external parties, including Site Establishment, Off‑Site Infrastructure, NI Programme, CIBOP Programme, and Sizewell B.
  • Ensure compliance with SZC Engineering and Design Management processes, including Design Management Plans, supporting delivery across the full design lifecycle from Technical Requirement capture through to EDR.
  • Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams to deliver design outputs in line with contract schedules and the Integrated Work Schedule (IWS).

Knowledge & Experience

  • Knowledge of design activities for heavy civil engineering structures, including reinforced concrete and structural steel, with familiarity with current design standards and working practices (e.g., British Standards) and/or experience in managing designs and multi‑disciplinary teams, including integration, design coordination, and delivery management.
  • Proven experience in providing, and a strong motivation to deliver, technical assistance and collaborative support within a technically focused delivery team.
  • Experience of working with specialist technical teams, including providing technical direction, oversight, and challenge to suppliers.
  • Experience of operating effectively within project delivery teams, contributing to programme, quality, and safety outcomes.
  • Strong communication and engagement skills, with the ability to interact effectively within the project team and, where required, across multiple levels and stakeholders, including Management Teams, SZC stakeholders, design delivery organisations, the Design Authority, and Regulators.
  • Advantageous experience within the nuclear sector, particularly relating to the design, assurance, and implementation of safety‑related structures, systems, and components (SSCs), with an understanding of nuclear safety, quality, and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications

  • Honours Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in delivery or management of design of Civil Engineering projects.
  • Ideally Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE) or working towards chartership.

Behavioural Competences

  • Humility: Recognise the value brought from different cultures and experiences. Be open to other's points of view and ideas, be willing to debate and to compromise.
  • Positivity: Positively challenge poor quality and performance. Identify solutions at the lowest possible level. Encourage others to bring new ideas forward.
  • Respect: Value the rules and environment in which we operate. Give and receive feedback with respect. Embrace and engage with new people and ideas.
