Marine Technical Lead in Newport

Help shape the UK's energy future. Marine Technical Lead opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), supporting Sizewell C. As part of the CWA, you will support the building of Sizewell C, a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes.

What will you do?

• Lead and control a section of the works according to a specific discipline.
• Provide management, leadership, and control of a multi-disciplinary team comprising Agents, Sub Agents, Section Engineers, and Site Engineers.
• Responsible for management of Subcontracts associated with the delivery of the work package.
• Determine the most appropriate means of satisfying customer/project requirements, objectives, and constraints: time, cost, quality, scope, risk, and benefits.

Health, Safety & Environmental

• Approve and review Method Statements and Risk Assessments and make improvements as appropriate.
• Coordinate an Accident/Incident Investigation.
• Carry out trend analysis and identify improvement areas from audits and near misses.
• Oversee vessel/site audits and confirm the sufficiency of control documentation.

Engineering Control

• Guide and coach subordinates in technical requirements associated with offshore installation work scope.
• Oversee and evaluate/approve supplier technical solutions.
• Guide and coach subordinates in resolution of construction issues, drawing on experience and accepted industry best practice.
• Provide input to design based on operational experience.

Quality

• Ownership of the whole process of production, checking, and submission of Handover Documentation.
• Implement systems and processes to support construction of the works in accordance with the specification.
• Carry out trend analysis of the above and identify improvement areas for nonconformance and business improvement.
• Conduct Independent Inspections of their own section and of others.
• Carry out Site Audits to check works and documentation compliance.
• Coach less experienced staff.
• Liaise with designer and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues.

Productivity

• Produce a fully resourced stage programme in the accepted format/software.
• Track and monitor KPI compliance and recommend improvements to maintain team production.
• Establish monitors of production, translated to graphical form from the Programme to aid understanding of current status and identification of requirements for intervention.
• Cross-reference section programme to three-weekly programme and ensure compatibility.

Commercial

• Maintain an accurate diary, including dialogue with external organisations (subcontractors).
• Produce a budget from the resourced programme and monitor/review weekly costs.
• Lead operational procurement of subcontractors.
• Manage sub-contractors.
• Understand cost and value.
• Produce correspondence to sub-contractors, suppliers, and Client.
• Support commercial team in AfP.

What are we looking for?

Knowledge & Skills

• Essential: Working knowledge of the NEC and other relevant forms of contract.
• Able to identify technical requirements and industry standard techniques associated with development & control of offshore/marine activities.
• Able to review, approve, and support and implement a programme/schedule.
• Able to review & approve safe systems of work relating to offshore/marine activities.
• Knowledge of the Construction and Design Management (CDM) regulations.
• Strong communication skills with a solution-oriented approach to issue resolution.
• Strong leadership and management skills, with experience of managing a multi-disciplined team.
• Wide-ranging independent judgement evident.

• Desirable: Knowledge of DCO and MMO License applications and implementation.
• Knowledge of the pre-construction process.

Qualifications & Experience

• Essential: Engineering Degree.
• Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card for managers and professionals.
• Experience with the development of programmes and schedules.
• Experience of managing Subcontractors with >5 years experience on offshore/marine projects.

• Desirable: Professional accreditation or working towards professional accreditation.
• Offshore sea survival qualification.
• Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS).
• 5-10 years experience of managing offshore/marine projects.
