The Data Governance & AI Compliance Lead is a new category of senior specialist that enterprises urgently need: someone who understands both traditional data governance and the emerging AI governance requirements that regulators, boards and customers are demanding. As AI systems proliferate, the governance gap is becoming a serious risk — this role closes it.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Own the enterprise data governance framework and extend it to cover AI systems: cataloguing, lineage, classification, quality standards and access policies using Microsoft Purview
- Design and operate the AI governance framework: pre-deployment AI risk assessments, bias audits, explainability requirements, model cards and AI system registers
- Lead compliance with AI-relevant regulations: EU AI Act, GDPR data minimisation in AI pipelines, FCA AI guidance, DORA
- Work with AI delivery teams to embed governance into AI development: reviewing training data for bias, assessing AI outputs for fairness
- Define data-for-AI quality standards: ensuring data that feeds AI systems meets accuracy, completeness and representativeness requirements
- Build and chair the AI governance committee: bringing together legal, compliance, data, technology and business stakeholders
- Produce AI governance reporting for the board, regulators and external auditors
- Develop AI ethics guidelines and responsible use policies practical enough for engineering teams and rigorous enough for regulators
Required Skills & Experience:
- 7+ years of data governance, data management or compliance experience with at least 2 years focused on AI governance
- Hands-on Microsoft Purview experience: scanning, classification, lineage, policy enforcement and Fabric integration
- Working knowledge of AI governance frameworks: EU AI Act risk categories, NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001
- Experience with data privacy regulations applied to AI: GDPR lawful basis for AI processing, PII in training data
- DAMA CDMP preferred; IAPP CIPP/E is a strong advantage
- Experience in a regulated industry: financial services, healthcare, insurance or government
- Strong stakeholder management: you can explain AI governance to a CTO and AI ethics to a board non-executive
What We Offer:
- Senior governance leadership with board-level visibility
- Salary £85,000–£110,000 based on experience
- Hybrid — London office and remote
- Strategic role at the intersection of data, AI and regulatory compliance
The Data Governance & AI Compliance Lead ensures an organisation can say, under regulatory scrutiny, that it knows what AI systems it has, what data they use and what risks they carry. If you have built governance frameworks that survived regulatory examination, this role is for you.
