Overview: We are seeking an experienced
Workshop Supervisor / Lead Service Engineer
to oversee the service, inspection, and repair of
industrial gearboxes and winches . This dual-role combines hands-on engineering expertise with supervisory responsibilities, providing an exciting opportunity for an individual to lead a small team while remaining technically involved in gearbox service and rebuild activities.
Key Responsibilities: Technical & Engineering Duties: Strip, inspect, and assess industrial gearboxes and winches.
Accurately measure and record component condition.
Identify wear, damage, and potential failure modes.
Produce detailed inspection reports supported by photographs.
Make repair recommendations and scope out recovery work.
Rebuild gearboxes using standard instructions or technical guidance.
Carry out mechanical fitting, assembly, and final testing.
Operate workshop equipment such as lathes, presses, torque multipliers, and hydraulic power packs.
Perform site-based inspections and overhauls (UK travel, occasional international).
Support fault finding and commissioning/decommissioning of systems.
Supervisory & Management Duties: Allocate and manage workload across the team.
Ensure workshop productivity and efficiency meet targets.
Monitor project progress and resolve bottlenecks.
Set daily/weekly priorities in coordination with the Service Coordinator.
Manage and train a small team of engineers and technicians.
Maintain high standards of quality, reporting, and documentation.
Ensure workshop safety and adherence to safe working practices.
Liaise with customers and internal teams regarding technical and service-related issues.
Contribute to workshop improvements, tooling, and process development.
Skills & Experience Required: Technical Skills: Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (minimum) or equivalent qualification.
Strong understanding of mechanical systems and gearbox assemblies.
Skilled in bench fitting, bearing fitting, and mechanical assembly.
Able to read and interpret engineering drawings.
Proficient in use of manual measurement tools (micrometers, verniers, feeler gauges).
Understanding of gearing systems, materials, failure modes, and recovery techniques.
Experience with rotating equipment, precision mechanical builds, and tolerances.
Supervisory Experience: Previous experience managing workshop teams or leading engineering projects.
Ability to allocate tasks, mentor junior staff, and ensure project delivery.
Clear communication and problem-solving skills.
Strong organisational ability and attention to detail.
Personal Attributes: Reliable, responsible, and self-motivated.
Positive attitude and team-focused.
Calm under pressure and adaptable to changing priorities.
IT literate and capable of producing written technical reports.
Willingness to travel occasionally for on-site inspections or service work.
