Job purpose: To provide engineering design and support functions. Responsible for small projects or sub-sections of larger projects under instruction of more senior engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage design projects from initial concept/enquiry through detailed design to manufacturing handover.
  • Provide design input on projects, using the technical competencies listed below.
  • Generation of ideas for developments and new products.
  • Be responsible for small projects or sub-sections of larger projects.
  • Produce engineering designs, specifications and documentation to ISO 9001.
  • Assist in the preparation of operating and maintenance manuals.
  • Offsite engineering support for new products.
  • Assist sales and marketing in the preparation of quotes and proposals.
  • Provide customer support.
  • Assist in the training of customer operating personnel.
  • Provide technical support to the production, logistics and integration departments.
  • Work within the requirements of company procedures and national and international regulations.
  • Work within the timescales and budgets set by the company.
  • Instruct, train and mentor subordinate engineering staff.
  • Other activities as directed by the Engineering Manager.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensure the suitability of the engineering aspects of company products for their function.
  • Prompt replies to production, logistical and technical support questions.
  • Provide design input on all projects as required, within the timescales set by the company.

Education/Qualifications (essential):

Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or related/equivalent subject (lesser qualifications coupled with suitable design experience may be considered in exceptional circumstances).

Technical Competencies (essential):

  • Electric motor types, designs and specification.
  • Power distribution and protection equipment.
  • Variable speed drives and soft-starts.
  • Wiring distribution systems.
  • Communication systems and protocols (RS232, RS485, SPI, I²C, Ethernet, etc).
  • Industrial sensors and equipment.
  • Video distribution, formats, conversion and storage.
  • Fibre optic multiplexers and ancillaries.
  • PCB manufacturing and standards.
  • PCB breadboard prototyping using soldering iron and hand tools.
  • Design of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
  • PCB design using Altium or equivalent.
  • Inspection, testing and certification requirements.
  • Ergonomics.
  • Completing and checking designs and documentation.

Technical Competencies (desirable):

  • Design of motor control electronic circuits.
  • Design of electrical power transmission systems.

Key Skills (essential):

  • Safety conscious, attentive to QHSE policies and regulations (ISO 9001 QA systems).
  • Sound engineering knowledge.
  • Cost conscious.
  • Technical drawing competence as defined above.
  • Flexibility, adaptability and professionalism, with the ability to work cooperatively as part of a multi-discipline team or individually on projects.
  • Ability to liaise with other members of staff including customers and third parties.
  • Time management with ability to plan workload, multi-task and work under pressure.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, clear technical writing and good record keeping.
  • Attention to detail and effective checking regime.
  • Software skills: Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD/DraftSight and Altium.
  • Willingness to learn new engineering skills.

Experience (essential):

Engineering design environment, three years minimum.

Experience (desirable):

Offshore experience. Design of ROV systems and associated equipment.

QHSE Competencies:

Maintain behaviour in compliance with HSE requirements. Maintain responsibility and accountability through personal commitment and behaviour. Report any unsafe or environmentally unsound acts and conditions to their immediate Supervisor such that remedial action can be taken to manage the risk.
