Role Purpose: We are looking for a Tech Lead Manager (TLM) to lead a high-impact engineering team, combining hands-on technical expertise with people leadership. You will be responsible for driving technical excellence, mentoring engineers, and delivering scalable, high-quality solutions that align with our company's strategic goals.
As a TLM, you will split your time between technical leadership (hands-on coding, system design, architecture, code reviews, and problem-solving) and people management (coaching, performance development, and talent growth). You will play a key role in hiring and developing the best, ensuring we maintain a culture of innovation, ownership, and high performance.
What you’ll be doing:
- Architect and design scalable, reliable, maintainable, and high-performing systems across the team
- Provide technical direction and guidance, championing best practices in system design, code quality, and DevOps
- Stay hands-on when required - review code, debug complex issues, and contribute to critical projects
- Drive adoption of modern engineering principles, including automation, CI/CD, and cloud-native architecture
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Data, Design) to translate business needs into technical solutions
- Hire, mentor, and grow a team of high-performing engineers, fostering learning and ownership
- Provide regular coaching, feedback, and career development support to engineers at different levels
- Ensure the team operates with high psychological safety and accountability, promoting open discussions and continuous improvement
- Lead performance management and talent reviews, developing the next generation of engineering leaders
- Own execution of the technical roadmap, balancing technical debt with feature development to ensure delivery and long-term scalability
What you’ll bring:
- Proven experience as a Tech Lead, Staff Engineer, or Engineering Manager in a high-growth, fast-paced environment
- In-depth knowledge of Golang (additional experience with PHP, Swift, or Kotlin is a bonus)
- Experience building microservices, ideally deployed in containers on Kubernetes
- Experience with agile development practices
- Experience with RDBMS and NoSQL datastores
- Deep understanding of scalable architecture, distributed systems, and cloud platforms (AWS or equivalent)
- Track record of leading and mentoring high-performing engineers, growing individuals and teams
- Strong collaboration skills with Product, Data, and Design teams, balancing technical and business priorities
- Bias for action - thrive in ambiguity, move quickly, and focus on impact
What success looks like here:
- Systems are architected and delivered to be scalable, reliable, maintainable, and high-performing, meeting team and business objectives
- Engineers on the team grow and develop under your mentorship, taking ownership and contributing effectively to team outcomes
- The team operates in a culture of psychological safety and accountability, with open discussions and continuous improvement embedded in daily practices
- The technical roadmap is executed successfully, balancing technical debt with feature delivery, ensuring long-term scalability and business impact
Benefits:
- 25 days plus bank holidays
- Bonus days off for Learning & Development, Mental Wellbeing, Birthday, Moving House & Christmas
- Working abroad policy (up to 60 calendar days per year)
- Bupa Health Insurance (YuLife)
- Life insurance powered by AIG (5x Annual Salary)
- Pension Scheme powered by "People's Pension"
- EAP (Mental health & wellbeing support, Life coach, Career coach)
