Currie & Brown's disputes team is a key part of its specialist services and has been identified as an area of targeted growth. The team is based in London, but this role can be based at any of our UK offices. The chosen candidate will support in the delivery of dispute avoidance, management, and resolution services, particularly in relation to quantum opinion and contractual advice, dealing with all aspects of delay and disruption matters in connection with projects and working closely with the unit director and other parts of the business, as well as maintaining and developing their own client base.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a chartered quantity surveyor or engineer, with experience and/or an interest in disputes services. The role will cover the full spectrum of dispute resolution services, including adjudication, mediation, litigation, arbitration, and general contract advisory services in supporting the UK business units.

Your core duties will involve:

  • Supporting the quantum and contract advisory services including:
    • Analysis of contractual claims including disputed variations, loss and expense and any finance related claims
    • Drafting opinion of the assessment of claims
    • Assisting in the production of CPR compliant expert reports
    • Supporting the delivery of other services such as delay services as appropriate to the commission
    • Liaising with client legal teams
    • Supporting with management activity and business development where appropriate.
    • Being an effective team member and able to lead a team on larger commissions.
    • Managing assistant experts and assisting in their training and development.
    • Advising the project teams in respect of dispute avoidance on current projects.
    • Managing own commissions from receipt of instructions to testimony in proceedings.
    • Financial management of commissions and responsible for P&L of commissions.
    • Business development, comprising meetings with lawyers/clients, participation in training and other seminars, writing articles for publication in trade journals.
    • Producing best practice analysis and reports.
    • Capturing and sharing knowledge across projects, enhancing our culture of innovation, and reinforcing our reputation as preferred service provider.

What skills and attributes are we looking for from you:

  • Chartered quantity surveyor or engineer with relevant industry experience.
  • Qualified to degree level with MRICS or MCIArb as minimum.
  • Experience of assessing and quantifying contractual claims.
  • Understanding of various methods of alternative dispute resolution.
  • Capable of producing clear concise opinions on matters in dispute leading to the production of CPR 35 compliant reports.
  • Experience of technical report writing, with the communication skills to hold and attend client-facing meetings.
  • Able to receive initial client brief and manage a commission to completion without supervision.
