The Candidate – You will be minimum of AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent) with at least 1 year of recent post-qualification experience or 3-4 years of practice experience. You should be confident preparing and reviewing accounts, VAT, and tax returns across a range of business types. The ideal candidate will also enjoy supporting and developing junior team members and be confident working directly with clients.
The Role – Based in Totnes, this is a hybrid Accounts Senior role supporting a diverse portfolio of clients including sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies. You will be responsible for planning, preparing, and reviewing accounts, preparing tax and VAT returns, managing correspondence, and offering support and training to junior colleagues.
Responsibilities –
- Plan, prepare, and review accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies.
- Send final accounts to clients.
- Set budgets independently and assist with accounts completion.
- Prepare and review personal and corporation tax returns.
- Calculate income and corporation tax liabilities and advise clients.
- Handle forecasting and manage everyday client correspondence.
- Manage tax enquiry work as it arises.
- Prepare management and financial accounts.
- Perform capital gains calculations for individuals.
- Prepare and submit VAT returns.
- Visit clients on-site and provide accurate advice and support.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships.
- Provide on-the-job training to junior staff.
- Coach and develop junior team members.
Essential Requirements –
- Minimum of AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent).
- At least 1 year post-qualification experience or 3-4 years in practice.
- Experience in accounts preparation, corporate/business tax, and ideally personal tax.
- Strong IT and spreadsheet skills.
- Proficiency in Sage, QuickBooks, Xero, and CCH.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage workload efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable (Not Essential) –
- Working towards ACCA/ACA/CTA.
- Experience in tax enquiry handling.
- Experience with capital gains tax calculations.
