The Candidate - You will be minimum of AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent) with at least 4 years of recent experience in a practice environment. You should be confident preparing accounts and tax returns across a range of client types, comfortable liaising directly with clients, and capable of supporting and mentoring more junior team members. You will have strong tax knowledge, solid spreadsheet and software skills, and excellent organisational abilities.
The Role - This is a hybrid Accounts Senior role based in Exeter. You will manage a diverse portfolio of clients, preparing accounts and tax returns for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies. You'll be involved in tax planning, forecasting, management accounts, and helping to coach and support junior staff. There is regular client contact, and the opportunity to contribute to business growth and quality service delivery.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and prepare accounts for sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies from client records.
- Review and finalise statutory accounts for submission to clients.
- Prepare and review personal and corporation tax returns.
- Support tax planning and calculate income tax liabilities.
- Prepare management and financial accounts.
- Conduct cash flow forecasting.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with new and existing clients.
- Deal with everyday client correspondence and emails in a timely manner.
- Undertake tax enquiry work as required.
- Supervise, coach, and assist junior team members, including on-the-job training.
- Provide accounting software training and guidance to clients.
- Set budgets for accounts preparation and monitor progress.
- Assist less experienced colleagues with accounts completion.
- Communicate regularly with managers and reporting partners on task progress.
- Complete daily timesheets accurately.
- Maintain a high standard of accuracy, organisation, and timeliness in all work.
- Engage in continuous professional development and stay current with industry changes.
Essential Requirements:
- Minimum of AAT Level 4 qualified (or equivalent)
- Minimum 4 years' experience in practice
- Strong knowledge of personal and corporate tax
- Excellent spreadsheet and IT skills
- Proficient with Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, and CCH
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Confident client liaison skills
- Able to support and develop junior staff.
Desirable (Not Essential):
- Working towards ACCA/ACA/CTA
- Experience delivering software training to clients.
- Experience in tax enquiry handling
