About The Role

Type: Fixed term contract with potential to extend. With continual growth and future expansion, Cura Terrae Land and Nature, formerly Ecus, are looking for suitable candidates to join the existing Archaeology teams in our Barnard Castle office. Initially, we are recruiting to support a busy upcoming summer and autumn schedule. Following the award of future projects, there may be opportunities for contract extensions. The role offers a combination of office and site‑based skills in archaeology and other environmental disciplines.

We are actively seeking project archaeologists at any career stage, including those with experience in geophysical survey or enthusiastic about such work. Candidates will learn new skills and tackle a diverse range of projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support to the project lead in the delivery of archaeological projects to professional standards.
  • Under direction and supervision, complete allocated project tasks such as hand excavation of archaeological features, within agreed scopes and timescales.
  • Work safely in accordance with Company Health & Safety requirements and report any health and safety concerns to the project lead.
  • Ensure you fully understand the work required and desired outcomes through communication with the project lead.
  • Be competent in basic excavation, field survey, post‑excavation skills, and other tasks with supervision and ongoing training.
  • Improve and develop skillsets and expertise, engaging with guidance and training as appropriate and required.
  • Maintain personal and professional development and training to ensure professional currency and meet the changing demands of the job.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with Company policies and procedures, and is legally compliant.
  • Accurately report all time spent on tasks in the specified timeframe.
  • Represent the Company in a professional and positive manner.

Additional Duties

  • Work at distance from designated office (away work) as required.
  • Carry out all and any other such duties, including geophysical surveys, training, and hours of work as may be reasonably required, consistent with the general level of responsibility for this role.
  • Maintain a full UK driving licence (preferred but not essential).
  • Contribute to and support positive morale within teams.
  • Maintain accreditation at Practitioner level or above in the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (PCIfA) (preferred but not essential).
  • Willingness to work as instructed in different practice areas across the business.
