Overview

Company: Water Utility Company based in Yorkshire region of England.

Role: Network Operations Technician.

Location: We currently have a vacancy for a Network Operation Technician to join our Customer Field Services department working in the Wastewater industry. You will be approximately 30 to 40 minutes away from our Blackburn Meadows wastewater site.

Contract and Hours: Permanent opportunities, Monday to Friday 37 hours per week plus standby, which will include late, early and weekend work.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary: from £28,270 to £35,039
  • Annual incentive related bonus: up to £1,000 maximum for the performance year

What You Will Do:

  • Deliver a first time fix and same day solution to customer and environmental problems and support the asset plan for network maintenance to eliminate escapes.
  • Work as a field-based technician within a geographical team to improve customer service and waste network performance; ensure a first-time fix and raise follow-on work in accordance with standards and specifications.
  • Ensure correct site setup and complete POWRA prior to and during jobs; identify risks and undertake corrective and preventive actions to stay safe at all times.
  • Safely maintain the sewerage network to resolve and/or prevent a sewage escape (flooding and pollution) and ensure no repeats occur.
  • Collaborate with Yorkshire Water teams and contracted partners on site to resolve and manage operational issues on the sewer network.
  • Operate different vehicle types as required by availability and task type.
  • Undertake thorough and timely investigations on the sewerage system to resolve issues and prevent repeat customer contacts; support other operational teams with investigations into sewer asset problems.
  • Utilise IT systems to collate information and relay feedback; collate data and information for evidence capturing, including assessing photographs and plans and reporting on any escape/issues.
  • Maintain and install Customer Sewer Alarms on the network and work with third party providers when required.
  • Ensure Health and Safety practices are followed; demonstrate financial awareness and provide technical support and first line response to customer contacts to ensure first time resolution and cost-effective solutions.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Practical mindset; enjoy working outdoors in all weathers; hands-on approach to tasks.
  • Experience in a customer service-related role with face-to-face communication.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external relationships; influence outcomes and make decisions.
  • Willingness to question unsafe working practices and report them to management.
  • Excellent communication skills to capture, evidence and feed back information; ability to influence outcomes and meet challenging targets.
  • Ability to diagnose root causes and find faults; rational problem-solving skills; basic IT skills to use internal systems (e.g., Toughbook).
  • Flexible rotas and standby out-of-hours work; full driving licence (no more than 6 points).
  • Ability to work within confined spaces and pass medical criteria including BMI, vision, blood pressure, hearing, and Spirometry tests.

Desirable/Additional:

  • Understanding of the sewerage system and performance issues; competence in IT systems relevant to Yorkshire Water; previous experience in water or wastewater sectors or related utilities, process or manufacturing sectors; understanding of drainage and sewerage systems.
  • Flexible working patterns and job share options where possible.
