Location: We are currently looking to recruit Mechanical Fitters to work across the Castlefield/Tadcaster areas in our maintenance department within our Wastewater business area here at Yorkshire Water.

Work type and Schedule: This is a mobile role. Permanent. You'll be working 37 hours per week. Out of hours, weekend work and bank holidays will be worked as part of a structured stand-by rota. Once fully trained you will be assessed for working independently and may be required to participate in an out-of-hours standby rota including evenings, weekends and overnight callouts (no more than 1 week in every 4).

What we do: We provide essential water and wastewater services to residents of the Yorkshire region and visitors, ensuring clean and safe drinking water and proper wastewater removal. We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire’s water today, tomorrow, 24/7, 365 days a year.

As a Mechanical Fitter, you will undertake maintenance of Yorkshire Water’s Mechanical assets across wastewater treatment and pumping installations. You will work mobile as part of a Maintenance Team to deliver planned and reactive maintenance and respond to emergency calls both in and out of hours (on-call rota). You will contribute to improved asset reliability through effective decision making.

Where you fit in: As a Mechanical Fitter, you will be required to work unsupervised in remote geographic locations and be accountable for completing planned and reactive mechanical tasks within agreed timescales, quality, and cost parameters. You will manage and prioritise your own workload and build and maintain relationships with operational customers, colleagues, suppliers, and contract partners. You will adhere to Health and Safety policy and standards, identify hazards, provide mitigation, and report onto the company hazard database. You will supervise approved Contract Partners, providing risk assessments and method statements where a permit to work is required. You will use a Toughbook and/or iPad to capture work activity and job status in line with workflow processes. You will assist in the development and training of apprentices and less experienced team members. You will install and commission new plant and equipment to relevant standards and diagnose and repair faults on systems and plant. You will identify and report follow-on work or areas for enhancement, conduct risk assessments, and create appropriate method statements when required. You may specify parts and equipment for procurement as part of day-to-day activities.

What Skills, Experience & Qualifications You Will Need:

  • Essential: Recognised Mechanical craft/Technician Apprenticeship and a City & Guilds / ONC / BTEC / NVQ / HNC / HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technician.
  • Full valid driving licence (no more than six points) due to site visits across the Yorkshire Region.

It Is Desirable That You Hold The Following Qualifications:

  • HNC in a Mechanical discipline.
  • CompEx 11.

Mandatory Experience:

  • Safe isolation to current IET regulations.
  • Time-served industrial mechanical fitter.
  • Working with rotating equipment.
  • Ability to produce maintenance reports.
  • Fault finding on mechanical systems.

Desirable Experience:

  • Maintaining and repairing centrifugal, positive displacement, RAM, progressive cavity, diaphragm, peristaltic pumps, and gearboxes.
  • With compressors, blowers, steam systems, chemical plant.
  • With hot work/fabrication and welding; operating lifting equipment and slinging; pneumatics and hydraulics.

Additional Requirements: Ideally, you will have experience as a Mechanical Fitter within the water or wastewater sectors or a related utilities, process, or manufacturing sector. You may need to work within confined spaces and must pass medical criteria (BMI, vision, blood pressure, hearing, spirometry) to ensure safety in hazardous environments.
