We are looking for a talented Manufacturing Engineer – Senior to join our team specialising in Manufacturing for our Manufacturing Engineering department in Darlington, United Kingdom.

This role is not hybrid. It will be site-based at our Cummins Darlington Engine Plant.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Safety: Create and maintain a safe working environment for all areas of the assembly line. Adhere to and promote site safety rules. Set an example to the rest of the team.
  • Lead Team Development: Manage, support and develop team members, identify skills gaps and training needs. Perform regular 1-to-1 meetings with team members. Manage team holidays and shift working strategy
  • Lead manufacturing projects: Drive end‑to‑end delivery of process and equipment changes that directly support safety, quality, and production goals.
  • Improve manufacturing processes: Own the manufacturing process and the PFMEA documents. Apply advanced manufacturing principles to enhance efficiency, reliability, and performance across key operations.
  • Implement continuous improvement: Use recognised CI tools to reduce waste, improve flow, and strengthen standard work.
  • Shape manufacturing standards: Develop, refine, and embed manufacturing standards, methods, and documentation across the site.
  • Influence key stakeholders: Communicate effectively with leaders, cross‑functional teams, and external partners to drive alignment and progress.
  • Design ergonomic workstations: Create safe, efficient, and ergonomic work environments that support operator wellbeing and productivity.
  • Solve complex problems: Use structured problem‑solving methodologies to identify root causes and implement robust corrective actions.
  • Develop tooling and fixtures: Select and design effective tooling solutions that ensure product quality and process stability.
  • Change Management: Embrace and adhere to the change management process. Execute changes with minimal disruption.

Responsibilities

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Manufacturing engineering experience: Proven background in process development, equipment changes, or production engineering.
  • Continuous improvement capability: Practical experience applying Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen or similar methodologies.
  • Technical documentation skills: Ability to produce clear, accurate process instructions and standards. Must be able to interpret engineering drawings, schematics and machine operating manuals.
  • Stakeholder leadership: Skilled in leading cross‑functional teams and influencing decision‑makers.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Engineering degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment with exposure to equipment, tooling, or process optimisation.
  • Evidence of problem‑solving capability using structured methodologies such as 8D, DMAIC, or similar.
  • Proven experience in managing a team in a manufacturing environment.
  • Communication must be able to communicate clearly on all levels across all departments within the plant.
  • Experience in Project Management shows the ability to lead multiple projects and deliver results.
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing processes and lean manufacturing tools.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc).
