DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented Workshop Test Technician to join our team specialising in Engineering for our DTO Product Development Department in Darlington, United Kingdom.
This is an onsite role with a rotational shift. Rotating 4 Week Shift Pattern of 12 Hour Shifts (7am – 7pm / 7pm – 7am).

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Hands-On Engine Work: Build, strip, service, and prepare diesel and gas engines for testing, working with both mechanical and electronic systems.
- Fault Finding and Diagnostics: Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve mechanical and system issues quickly to keep engines moving through the production process.
- Workshop-to-Test Flow: Manage the full process from receiving engines into the workshop, fitting and servicing components, adding instrumentation, and preparing them for handover to test cells.
- Collaboration Across Teams: Work closely with engineers, office staff, and test cell technicians to ensure engines are prepared to the highest standards.
- Quality Paperwork and Reporting: Complete service records, paperwork, and diagnostic documentation accurately to support test validity.
- Supporting Safe Installations: Move and position engines safely, aligning them correctly for testing, while following all health and safety procedures.
- Maintaining Standards: Uphold workshop cleanliness, support 5S initiatives, and contribute to ISO17025 compliance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role, you will need the following:
- Mechanical Expertise with Engines: Strong hands‑on knowledge of diesel and/or gas engines, including servicing, strip‑down, rebuilds, and component fitting.
- Diagnostic and Problem‑Solving Skills: Ability to fault‑find both mechanically and electronically, supporting smooth and efficient workshop operations.
- Commitment to Quality and Safety: Proactive in following health and safety processes and ensuring work is completed to high standards of accuracy and compliance.
- Adaptability in a Fast‑Paced Environment: Able to manage different engine builds, work to variable timescales (from days to weeks), and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Computer Literacy: Comfortable using engineering software and office tools for instructions, recording data, and completing documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
- Desired – NVQ/HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification, or significant relevant experience gained through practical work.
- Experience in servicing, repairing, and rebuilding engines (diesel/gas) in a workshop or industrial environment.
- Demonstrates a strong mechanical foundation, with technical knowledge gained through education, training, or hands‑on work.
- Apprenticeship background or extensive workshop experience is highly beneficial.
- Shows commitment to ongoing learning and professional development.
