We are looking for a talented Engineering Specialist to join our team specialising in Motor Controls Software Design & HIL Simulation for Cummins Drivetrain & Braking Systems in Cwmbran, United Kingdom. This role involves developing, implementing, and validating advanced control strategies for electric brake and steering systems, ensuring robust performance across a range of operating conditions. It requires up to 25-30% of domestic and international travel frequency.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Innovative Control Systems: Leading the design and development of advanced motor and inverter control algorithms, including Field-Oriented Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), and sensorless control techniques. Optimising system performance and precision with expertly written control logic and algorithms.
- Simulation and Validation: Creating and refining mathematical models using simulation tools to ensure robust and reliable control strategies.
- Embedded Software: Integrate embedded control software with HIL systems for closed-loop testing and fault injection analysis.
- Testing and Validation: Develop and maintain HIL simulation environments using platforms such as dSPACE, NI VeriStand, or Speedgoat for real-time validation of control software. Analyze simulation and test data to optimize control performance and ensure compliance with system-level specifications. Support automated testing and regression analysis through scripting and toolchain development.
- Safety Compliance: Contributing to the overall reliability and safety of products by ensuring software and systems meet safety standards like ISO 26262.
- Cross Functional Collaboration: Ensuring comprehensive system requirements and functionality through close collaboration with electronics, mechatronics, mechanical, and safety teams.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Maintaining system reliability and efficiency by diagnosing and resolving electro-mechanical, electrical/electronics, and electro-pneumatic system issues.
- Documentation and Knowledge Transfer: Supporting knowledge transfer and continuous improvement within the team by creating detailed technical documentation and mentoring less-experienced engineers.
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Strong Technical Expertise: Deep knowledge of motor control theory, inverter topologies, and power electronics, especially for PMSM, BLDC, and induction motors.
- Advanced Tool Proficiency: Hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, embedded software development, and HIL platforms like dSPACE or NI VeriStand.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to interpret simulation/test data, debug complex systems, and optimize control strategies for performance and reliability.
- Collaborative Mindset: Effective communication and teamwork skills to work across disciplines, define system requirements, and lead validation efforts.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors or Masters degree in electrical engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
- Proven expertise in motor control theory, inverter topologies, and power electronics.
- Extensive experience in developing and tuning control algorithms for PMSM, BLDC, and induction motors.
