We are looking for a talented Test Engineer to join our team specializing as Commercial Vehicle Brake Test Engineer for Cummins in Cwmbran test laboratory, UK.
Working hours: Monday–Thursday: 07:30–16:00, Friday: 07:30–12:30. This is an on‑site role with no hybrid working due to the requirement for daily hands‑on interaction with laboratory test rigs.
Responsibilities
- Support the operation and ongoing development of torque rigs within the Cwmbran commercial brake testing laboratory, ensuring safe, accurate and reliable test execution.
- Undertake a structured one‑to‑one knowledge transfer and shadowing programme with the retiring role holder to ensure effective succession and continuity of rig ownership.
- Review incoming test requests to confirm that required parameters and values are within rig capabilities, liaising with test requestors to clarify and align requirements where necessary.
- Coordinate closely with test requestors and the rig planner to manage test scheduling, start and finish points, and communicate progress or changes as required.
- Monitor tests throughout execution to ensure requested conditions and performance targets continue to be achieved, investigating and resolving deviations where identified.
- Act as the technical owner and local subject matter expert for the assigned torque rigs, becoming the primary point of contact for troubleshooting, system improvements and technical queries.
- Contribute to the specification, design, validation and support of laboratory test systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems, while supporting structured problem‑solving activities such as FMEA, problem solving.
- Crosstrain across other areas within Cwmbran test facility to provide strength in depth during absences, support laboratory customers and technicians, and assist in executing tests with a focus on data accuracy, equipment calibration, reliability and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of function‑based product testing, including the ability to select appropriate equipment and techniques, operate products within hardware or software‑based test environments, record and evaluate operational data, and analyze results in line with verification and validation requirements to support engineering decision‑making.
- An understanding of laboratory equipment safety, including the ability to identify and assess hazards across the test laboratory including but not limited to lifting equipment, fuels, electrical systems, toxins, and other environmental risks, and to apply appropriate risk mitigation and safeguarding measures.
- Experience or academic grounding in product function test system design, with the ability to interpret test standards or customer requirements, select and integrate suitable instrumentation and control systems, and assess equipment capability against defined performance criteria.
- Flexibility and willingness to cross‑train across multiple brake and component test rigs to support team coverage across the laboratory; experience in commercial brake testing is preferred, though candidates with transferable skills from similar test environments will also be considered.
- A strong understanding of 5S and continuous improvement processes and the willingness to be the champion of projects across the test laboratory.
- College, university, or equivalent associate’s degree or certification in an appropriate STEM field is preferred.
- Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in a laboratory/test cell environment as a non‑exempt employee, temporary student employee (intern, co‑op) or an early‑career professional in a relevant operations or technical discipline area.
- Knowledge of MS Office tools and Windchill is also preferred.
- Experience of data capture, analysis and reporting is also preferred.
- Knowledge of C++ and Python programming is preferred.
