We are looking for a talented Design & Development Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for Cummins in UK, Cwmbran. This is a permanent role, hybrid working 60% onsite with core flexible working hours; however, 100% onsite working is expected during the validation phase of projects. The role will also require 10% Domestic and 10% International travel as required.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Perform brake application reviews, calculations, tolerance studies, and brake-related analyses to support product design decisions.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret technical test data to inform product performance, quality, and reliability improvements.
  • Investigate product issues by identifying root causes, recommending corrective actions, and owning problem resolution with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Execute technical processes including Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, and Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) participation.
  • Develop, coordinate, and oversee test validation programs, including planning, execution, and reporting of results.
  • Conduct technical reviews with suppliers and customers to ensure product requirements, risks, and interfaces are clearly understood and managed.
  • Mentor and support new engineers or student placements, providing technical guidance and coordination of tasks.
  • Coordinate subsystem/component engineering activities across product lifecycle processes (PPT, VPI, CPS), acting as a central technical point between internal teams, suppliers, and manufacturing.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Strong engineering foundation with the ability to alternate between theoretical analysis and hands-on practical application in automotive environments.
  • Solid understanding of materials, stress/strain theory, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for evaluating component performance and durability.
  • Effective Communication: Excellent skills in communication, presentation, and report writing to effectively share progress and final reports, and to collaborate with stakeholders and team members.
  • Familiarity with modern engineering tools and practices; foreign language proficiency considered a plus for global collaboration.
  • Intellectual Property: Proposing and preparing new ideas for invention disclosures and patent filings will protect and advance the company's technological innovations.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: College, university, or equivalent Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post-graduate (Master’s) degree relevant to this discipline area is desirable but not essential.
  • Technical Expertise: A good foundation in Mechanical or Automotive engineering, along with relevant design and development experience. Proficiency in tools like Creo and Windchill, and a solid understanding of materials, stress/strain theory, and FE Analysis are essential.
  • Nice To Have But Not Required: Regulatory and Testing Knowledge: A thorough understanding of European and US brake legislation, experience with brake test methods and procedures, and knowledge of manufacturing methods and processes to ensure compliance and quality in product development. Experience in Automotive Sector, foundation brake (disc & drum) / braking system knowledge. Experience with programming, Python / code writing for data acquisition.
