Job Description:

*Police Staff Vacancy*

.

.

The main role of a Custody Detention Officer is to ensure the safety and welfare of those the police have arrested and detained in one of our custody suites. Detention Officers work across a 24/7 shift pattern, ensuring high quality care is provided to those detained within our custody suites, whilst ensuring the smooth running of the suite and ensuring the safety and well-being of detainees and visitors. The role of a detention officer includes: –

.
β€’ Working with custody sergeants to support booking in procedures, supporting initial documentation, recording of property and completing checks on police systems.
β€’ Taking of fingerprints, DNA samples and photographs.
β€’ Working with key professional partners in the custody suite, including healthcare providers, mental health staff, solicitors, and interpreters.
β€’ Manging the care and wellbeing of detainees throughout their detention. This will include the provisions of food and drink, regular cell checks, supporting hygiene requirements and ensuring cells remain clean.
β€’ Answering calls from solicitors, other agencies or contacts known to the detainee.
β€’ Providing a supportive and non-judgemental ear to detainees and liaising with the wider custody team to help get them the required support.
Key skills required for Detention Officers will include being able to effectively communicate with detainees, who may be going through a stressful or traumatic life experience.

.

Those detained in custody often have vulnerabilities, so it is vital to be able to work as part of a team to help those detainees along with others who may display challenging behaviour. You will be provided training to help with the management of such situations, but it is also important to have a good level of resilience.

.

You need to be at least 18 years old and don’t need to have any specific qualifications to apply. You must be able to attend a Detention Officer initial training course at Cumbria Constabulary Police HQ starting on 27th October . This post is subject to background checks and vetting.”
